I don't have my DVD anymore to be able to open IFO, etc. files in DVDShrink or Clonedvd.

Is there anyway to burn my avi movie(I still have the vob files and ifo, but it won't open in DVDShrink or Clone) onto my DVD+RW?

    Hello,

If you just want to preserve the avi just burn it as data onto the dvd.

If you want to CONVERT it to dvd video check out THESE GUIDES.

    Hello,

Also, you can burn the video_ts folder with any dvd burning software. Just make it the main directory ie d:/video_ts.

    Thank you.

I also have a question on DVD Shrink versus Nero. I successfully backed up one of my DVDs using DVD Shrink only and it played well on the DVDplayer. What's the point then for using Nero6 and/or Clone DVD?

Sorry I'm knew at this, but thank you for your help.

    Hello,

Dvd shrink is just one of many transcoders. It's the one I happen to use a lot. It's preference mostly.

How would I do this with just an avi file or vob/ifo files?

    Hello,

Use the video_ts folder with the vobs in it. Open your burning software and drag the video_ts folder onto your dvd project. Then burn it.

What burning software would you recommend in dragging the vob files to burn on DVD? Would it be only the vob files I need? And do you recommend Nero?

thanks so much for your help

Is there anything DVDshrink can't burn on disk? Such as 2hr+ movies? If so which program do you recommend backup up these movies with? The ones with dual layer as well?

    Hello,

The whole point of dvd shrink is to SHRINK a large dual layer movie into the space needed for a single layer disc.

Use nero, roxio, or any other dvd capable burning software to burn the video_ts folder as a DATA dvd. The video_ts folder is ALREADY in dvd format. You just need to burn the folder to the dvd.

All of the vob files are too large to burn on DVD. I no longer have the DVD disk to be able to shrink the files in DVDshrink.

Is there another suggestion on how I may go about backing up a movie when I only have the avi or vob files?

    DVDHelpPlease:
    First the preamble:
I hope the vob files on your hd for which you no longer have the original disc are non-commercial (forum rules). The fact that you mention a commercial DVD and the length of the movie may suggest otherwise. The onus is on you to clarify that point. The ambiguity could make it difficult for some to assist you.

There are many ways to convert from avi to DVD (see the tools section on this site). many use tmpgenc to create a DVD compliant mpeg2 file and then an authoring program (see tools section onsite) to create menus and a DVD structure. If the output is too large then use DVDShrink to fit the DVD to size and optionally burn the DVD. I also use NEODVD to do this in one step. The newer versions of NEODVD have a fit to disc option to maximize space on the disc. Keep in mind that you have to create the menus and chapters yourself in the authoring programs when converting avi.

Vob to DVD is also posible using different tools. First, if the DVD structure is intact (all ifo and vob) then in DVDshrink choose file open (not disc) and browse for the dvd on your hd. If all is ok then just shrink to fit and all the original menus will be available. If that doesn't work then use a dvd Authoring tool like DVDlab, Tmpg DVD Author etc.. and load all the vob and reauthor the dvd. You will of course lose all the original menus and chapters and have to create your own within the app of choice.

There are other programs available like ifoedit, vobedit menuedit etc.. (tools section) which work on a different level but these are more advanced low level raw tools.

Sorry for ambiguity. What I'm trying to do is make backups for my DVDs.

And I'm so new at this, I have no idea what I'm asking sometimes.

As for the disk I no longer have anymore, is not in my possession at the moment and I was curious if there was a way to recreate bup files?

I do have the vob and ifo files, but DVD Shrink won't open them for me.

    thank you for your help.

The bup file is a backup of the ifo. Just copy it to another folder, rename it to bup and copy it back to the dvd folder

Is it possible to simply burn an avi movie on a DVD+RW in Nero so that the avi file can playback on my DVD player?

If so what steps would I have to take?

Sure it's possible, if your player will play an avi.

That's exactly why I bought my Philips DVP-642. It plays divx/mpeg4 avi files. I specifically bought it so I can timeshift TV shows to DVD+RW or CDRW to view at my leasure. A good quality divx with 16 bit 128 mp3 cbr audio uses about 700mb for every hour and a half of show (give or take a bit). Its got a few limitations but at $79.99 Canadian it was a great purchase.

btw) The player also plays mpeg1, mpeg2 and vob (with ac3 audio) files without authoring.
