  1. I'm sure many others are doing the same thing.

My goal is to capture the DV with main concept, edit in premiere, and make an SVCD compliant mpeg (using avisynth plugin)

I have it working, but it's quite a pain.

I have to capture as type 1, otherwise i'm limited by the file size to about 9 minutes of video. This leaves me with 3 or 4 files of type 1. Then, i use the mainconcept DV out program to convert these files to type 2. Then, I edit in premiere as necessary and export. Premiere will import type 1 files, but seems to have a major problem with them.

The biggest pain in the whole process is converting the type 1 files to type 2.

Does anyone have a suggestion for making this process easier?

  2. why only 9 mins? i managed to cap about 20mimns in type 2 before i hit the 4gb limit in win98. i used the sonicfoundry vidcap prog.

  3. Humdinger, that's true. I can get 18 minutes at the 4 gig size for type 2. But, it's still the same problem. to capture more than 18 minutes, you need to use multisave and type 1.

  4. Well you have a few choices..... Either continue what you are doing, get another program that supports multi-segment captures,or switch operation systems.

  5. Thanks Tommy,

Is there a program you can suggest that does type 2, multifile captures?

as far as i know, the only program that does DV multifile captures at all is mainconcept. But, others may have more experience with DV video than myself. That's why I posted.

  6. vdub and avi io both have the multi file capture feature and can be found in the tools section. vdub is free and avi io is about $20 (but does have a demo).

  7. Thanks, I've used them both before, but never for DV stuff. I didn't know they did that.

  9. i believe the sounicfoundry cap prog, which is meant as an addon for vegas video, but is a free download that works on its own, will cap multi segmented dv. u have to make sure to check the options to get type2 dv though

Re: The Sonic Foundry capture program. You are right, it will capture to segmented DV Type 2.

  11. ...more of a question related to the subject:

is there an easy way of identifying what type of DV AVIs you've captured? Let's say...using StudioDV?

And is the file size limitation related to the AVI type? Or is it in relation to OpenDML AVIs?

I'd like a little more info too....

VDub has told me that I have TYPE1 DV files and it can not use the audio...

How do I capture to TYPE2?

What are TYPE 1 and 2????

    TIA

  13. If your using studio dv in win2k or whatever as long as the drive is formated ntfs, it'll capture until you run out of space on the drive.

Some programs have a problem with avi files over 2 or 4gb.

I use ulead Media Studio or Video studio to capture my DV from my camera as I found it the most simple method. Using Win2000 or XP & NTFS fromatted drive. Press record and its dumps the DV to the HDD until you want to stop, splitting automatically into 3.99mg sizes.(HDD space allowing).I never get dropped frames on my lowly AMD K62500.
Whats better is you can then convert the Audio within the AVI from 48 to 44.1 KHZ(without having to seperate the audio from video or any other bullshit method, external tools plugins etc etc) Which is great for the Tmpgenc encoder when you want to make VCD/SVCD as it does not like 48KHZ sound.

Ulead have demos of both these proggies

  15. If you want the best DV capture app, you cant go past Scenalyzer. I don't know why there isn't more talk on this site about it. It does cost a few dollars, but since I started using it, my life of capture and output is EASY!! Now if only Premiere would work as well as Scenalyzer my life would be a breeze

  16. I used Scenalyzer to capture From Sony Professional DV CAM, to then output to DVD-R. It captured fine but when it came to converting to mpeg2 PAL using TMPeg i get an error message saying something or other about "GOPS" before each scene or something (Will find out exactly when i get home Later). When i used MyDVD 2.3 it took forever to encode the original capture (1.4 Athlon XP Pro 256ddr GF3 deluxe )and when it did nearly 24hrs later the resulting DVD-R was crap!! Therefore Scenalyzer was no good to me to capure vid from DV. Any suggestions here will be helpful One more thing I am trying to capture DV on premiere 5.1c through firewire but don't get a picture on capture window. Any ideas why it doesn't capture using Premiere but does using Ulead DVD Director, Scenalyzer and win moviemaker etc blah blah.

sometimes simpler is better! i've got an amd k6-3 350mhz machine myself and use ulead's videostudio too. i'll admit, it has nowhere near the amount of (useful) video effects that premiere has, but because it isn't such a feature-rich application, adding titles and crossfades is quick and easy. premiere is just too big an app right now for my low-powered machine.

The definitive WDM and/or DV capture program is Capture.exe by Puremotion free to use and distribute, included as part of Edit Studio demo. Completely flexible on Dv Type 1 or 2 Open DML or Avi 2.o stds. Captures analog or DV. Check it out. Also has free brainless gui DV Type converter.

  19. That is a great site. As well as a Type 1 / Type 2 coverter, it has a great tutorial on the difference between them plus file size limits etc.

Capture seems like a great program. But everytime I use it it drops 30-90 frames during a hour capture. I have started using ScenalyzerLive to capture and it has never dropped a frame. Scenalyzer will also capture either Type1 or Type2 DV files.

    I have a slow Celeron 366.

  22. Right please can somone answer this....
I have also used scenalyzer to capture from DVCam Video recorder.
When you go to capture settings in Scenalyzer you can set it to capture
Type 1 avi file (Media Studio 6)
    Type 2 (Premiere etc)
Studio DV with ??scn files??(many scenes in 1 file)
Studio DV with ??scn files?? (1 scene in 1 file).

File size isn't a problem cause i'm using win xp pro full version NTFS.

Is there a difference in quality of captured AVi file using each of these methods??

It doesn't matter about scene detection also because i'm gonna use DVD-R authoring software to set chapter points etc.

I then want to output to Tmpeg to make an Mpeg2 suitable file for DVD-R. Sorted my problem from earlier post

    OR

Buy Ulead DVD Movie Director and use their capture/output to MPeg 2

    Burn using Ulead

    Ohh one more thing
I have adobe premiere 5.1c and a firewire card but can't seem to get video to show up in capture window. Therefore i don't think its being picked up by premiere.
Any ideas, or shall i stick to one of the above

Which will i get best result with?
    RimmeR

    PS
(I've got a koool template for getting best mpeg2 files at the best quality for DVD Pal.It even makes the final file smaller than if you use the Constant Quality setting within DVD Pal.mcf. Only thing is it takes more time )
