  1. I have a few new files that are xvid and I'm assuming that they are encoded with the newest version of the xvid codec because I was able to convert some older videos that are encoded in xvid.

I have the latest 1.0.1 codec of xvid installed and I can play the files using MPC but I can't convert the video with VirtualDub and VirtualDubMod. When I try to convert I get "Error decompressing frame 0, unknown error etc"

VirtualDub will also not play the files, giving the same error message at the bottom status bar.

Use FourCC changer and change the four CC code to divx (both fields I think) and try that.

    This worked, thank you.

Can you explain why it needed to be changed to work with virtualdub?

I wish I could! I tried to sort out this same problem with vdub, but had no luck. So I used fourcc Changer and it worked for me so thought it may work for you too.

One thing I have learnt after a few years in this hobby. If one tool fails to perform as expected, simply try another that supposedly has the same feature. Chances are that you will find one that works correctly on your particular file/problem.
