Intel Pent. 2.8 Hgz 800 Mhz FSB or AMD XP 2600 ?

What for should I get, I was going to get the AMD Xp 2600 but for only $100 more I can get a Intel Pent. 2.8 Hgz 800 Mhz FSB.

What do you guys think ?

Depend on what you intend to use your PC. For video encoding (convert AVI to MPEG3(DVD), go for Intel with 400 FSB.

Depends on what you're going to be using it for mostly. The Intel chips have longer pipelies and seem better suited for video work. But because of the long pipelines, they're not as good as AMD's shorter pipelines when running branchy code like gaming.

My new home machine is the P4 2.8 HT, 1MB L2 and it is very fast. It runs on the warm side - about 150F when CPU-intensive tasks are running.

As long as it's a Northwood P4 you're getting then that's fine. Don't get the Prescotts. The larger bus speeds are great for video and design apps. The greater speed of both the clock and FSB will give it a slight advantage over the Athlon in gaming as well. Remember, the reason AMD rates their clocks higher in the naming convention is partly to show the performance of those shorter traces. Pair that P4 up with a good 875 chipset motherboard and you've got a great system. However the Athlon system will work just as well for most applications and be cheaper to allow you room to get a better video card or something instead. In some cases for gaming this is a far better option, thus another reason why AMD has dominated the gaming market.

If you're willing to spend another $100 on Intel... Then I think the question should be how much more AMD can you get for $100? Here are some prices I found googling:

Intel 2.8Ghz 800fsb (4x200) = $183-269
AMD 2600+ 333fsb (2x166) = $90-125
AMD 3200+ 333fsb = $132-180
AMD 3200+ 400fsb (2x200) = $182-265
AMD 64 3200+ 2000fsb = $205-299 (fsb is integrated with cpu)

Wow, I upgraded my 1200+ to a 2600+ just a few months ago and considered the A64 ($400+). If I would have seen the A64 at $205 then, I'd have jumped all over it. And it has the same SSE/SSE2/3dNOW/3dnow+, hyperthreading as the newer Intel's. Oh, well, Christmas isn't too far away.....
