  1. I recently purchased a JVC DR-M10SL unit from ecost.com. I have been very pleased with the quality of the recordings until I tried to record a movie from my cable box. At about the same time, I switched media brands (both -R), so I haven't ruled this out as a potential source of the problem. I was using Maxell purchased at wally world and am now using Verbatim purchased at Sam's Club.

Anyway, the problem that I'm seeing is an occasional hiccup in the recorded program. It's almost as if things temporarily freeze and then speed up to catch up with where they need to be. This happens pretty quickly, usually lasting about 1 second or less. Sometimes it's hardly noticeable unless you are looking for it, but other times it is very noticeable. Usually occurs lots of times during the program, every few minutes or so. The sound seems to be unaffected.

I first thought it might be the fact that I was recording from the cable boxes On Demand feature, but I've also recorded other normal programs that I've seen this happen with as well. I'm using the composite A/V inputs since my cable box doesn't have an S-vid out.

Thanks for any feedback you guys can provide. I will continue to try other things.

If the Verbatim is CMC discs, that's the problem most likely.

  3. I'm not sure if they are CMC discs or not. They are shiny on top and made in Taiwan if that means anything.

Anyway, it appears that the discs are the problem. I tried some more of the Maxell discs from wally world and they appear to be fine. I'm feeling much better now. If only I new how to tell what discs are good for this recorder.

    Thanks.

Good quality blank media is essential.

  5. Don't know about how good that list is, everything on Optodisc says good, out of 100 discs I had 10-15 bad ones. Just looking at them on the spindle I can see light through in many places from warpage. Out of 180+ Prodiscs I haven't had a problem yet.

Lordsmurf is most likely correct. i've tried those sam's club discs and they suck. but there may also be another problem that is not as likely as bad media but still possible.

I have Time/Warner digital cable and at least twice a day my digital tier will freeze for a second then "pop" back into place. this happens twice as much if i use their OnDemand service (If it actually works that day).

I assume that this is due to the data stream being interrupted for a sec, almost like a buffer underrun.

  8. I haven't gotten a DVD burner/drive for the PC yet and I'm assuming that's the only way to get the disc info.

    Thanks for the replys.
