    I have recently purchased the NEC 2510A DVD burner and I can't get the thing to burn 8X.

    It is running at Ultra DMA 2.

    I have tried Ridata 8X, I didn't even get an 8x option only 4x.

    I tried Prodisk and got an 8x option, but it still burned at 4x.

    I can't find any firmware updates that will allow me to burn faster.

    What next? Does anyone know of any firware updates? What disks will work if any?

  2. Three notes/suggestions:

    1. Download and upgrade your drive with the latest firmware for the ND-2510A, which is 2.06, from http://tdb.rpc1.org. 2.06 now supports 8x recording on RITEKG05 discs.
    2. Remember that all 8x burns on the NEC drive start at 4x, then jump to 6x, then jump to 8x. Remember also that NEC's 8x write strategy is very conservative (read: slow).
    3. To see what speed your burner is really burning your discs at, do a Nero CD Speed Write Simulation or use it's "Create Data Disc" option. As the disc is written, you'll see your drive's recording speed on the graph.

    Which bin do I flash? The 2510ORIG.BIN, 2510FAST.BIN or the 2510RPC1.BIN?

  4. ORIG = unmodified original firmware from NEC.
    FAST = 12xRip patched.
    RPC1 = RPC-1 & 12xRip patched.

    Note that NEC has just released firmware revision 2.16 for the NEC ND-2510A, which has exactly the same write strategy revision version numbers as 2.06. Use either firmware - but remember that 2.06 has been patched for your convenience.

  5. How do you know your 8X Prodisc only burned at 4X?
    How long did it take for the burn to complete?
    What app and exact version number are you using to burn?
    What is the MID code of your disc?
    If it's an 8X DVD+R disc, the MID should be PRODISCR03

    I updated the Firmware to 2.06 and it worked great. Both the Ridata and Prodisk will now burn up to 8x. You are right TerminalVeloCD the drive starts at 4x then to 6x and completes the disk at 8x.

    I ran a Nero CD Tool test and the average speed was around 6.8x. If you ask me , I think that is a bunch of bullshit. Don't advertise 8x if it can't burn the whole time at 8x. But it's better that my old 2x.

    And, Wesociety I am absolutley sure I have Prodisk R03 and Ridata G05's.

  8. 4x-6x-8x Z-CLV is not B.S. at all - that's one of only two ways that DVD writers can reach 8x without discs exploding or motors being over-stressed.

    If you read about CD/DVD technology, you would learn that in order for a disc to be read or written at a constant speed throughout (CLV), a drive needs to spin the disc at a much higher speed when reading/writing close to the centre of the disc as opposed to when the drive is reading/writing from the outer edge. Now if drive manufacturers allowed DVD writing at 8x CLV, the disc would need to be spun at over 10,500rpm in order for the inner tracks to be written. This would possibly cause poorly manufactured discs to crack and explode (not good!), and would certainly cause unwanted high levels of noise to be emitted from the drive and increased stress to the drive's motor. This is why drive manufacturers use Z-CLV or P-CAV write strategies for writing discs at 6x (sometimes 8x) to 12x and full CAV write strategies for writing discs at 16x (with the exception of Pioneer who is still using Z-CLV for 16x writes).

    By the way, if you have a 52x CD-RW, you'll find that it uses a CAV write strategy when writing at 52x. The drive will start writing at a speed of around 22x or 23x and will smoothly and constantly "accelerate" until it reaches 52x at the end of the burn. It is worth noting that CAV write strategies keep the drive's motor spinning at almost a constant speed throughout the burn.

    Do a Google search for "CLV", "Z-CLV", "CAV", and "P-CAV" to read more about these write strategies.
