  1. I just purchased a new computer (P4 3.2, 1GB, DVDROM and DVD+/-RW) After I set it up and while I was testing it out, I ran a few DVDR's that I had burnt on my old system with a Lite-On 811. Everything seemed to have massive amounts of macroblocks covering the majority of the screen. These played back the same way on both the DVDROM and the DVDRW which makes me think either there is a setting I need to change or I need a different MPEG2 decoder or something else is screwy.

I haven't as yet installed any of my video programs so everything is as it came with the exception of DVDINFOPRO which I loaded so I could see what the features of the drives were.

I tested playback with Maxell DVD-R, Ritek DVD+R and Memorex DVD+RW(Princo). They all play back the same which leads me to think again that it is simply a setting or a codec or something which might take care of itself once I start loading my programs.

BTW...pressed DVD9's seem to playback fine

I don't have the specs in front of me but the DVDROM is a Sony and the DVDRW is a...big sigh...Artec. I ordered an NEC but because they were out of stock they substituted an ARTEC which they said was an UPGRADE???...Anyway...I will be changing that soon. Regardless, I don't think that is related to the problem at hand.

    Thoughts, suggestions??

    Thanks

  2. What did you use to play them back?

You may want to try and load your CyberLink or Intervideo DVD Player proggies and see if that loads the appropriate codecs to work properly.

EDIT ** also, what is your video card... motherboard video sharing ram -- if so make sure the ram allocated is at least 32Megs.

What software are you using to watch these with? I wouldnt think its a codec problem if pressed dvd's have no problems. Have you run some read tests on your dvd backups? perhaps they arent reading very well.

  4. It was late last night and I didn't have a chance to try much. I will load Intervideo tonight as that is what I usually use. They loaded some player I had never heard of and can't think of off the top of my head. I ran one error test on one Maxell DVD-R with the Sony DVDROM and it came back fine. It makes me scratch my head wondering what is going on. I configured and bought the system through CyberPower out of California. Took forever to get it...over 6 weeks. I will update my Computer Details later when I know thw model numbers of the Sony and Artec. It is a P4 3.2 1Gig DDR 400, 200Gig WD, ATI AIW 9600, ABIT IC7G

  5. Unfortunately I didn't have much time last night as personal obligations got in the way. Hopefully tonight I will have an opportunity to load Intervideo and try my DVDR-'s with that and see if they play fine. Thanks

  6. Loading WinDVD did the trick! The huge amount of macroblocks are gone on my previous burns using my Lite-On 811 in my old computer. I am not quite sure what it added during the installation (my installed video codec list didn't change). Whatever it was it sure worked well. Thanks so much for all of your suggestions!

Now I just have to battle with the POS Artec writer they set it up with (VOM-12E48X). I find it interesting that My Maxell DVD-Rs that have a max write descriptor of 4X (per DVDINFOPRO) on my Lite-On show up as 6X with the Artec yet will only write at 2.4X since the max read speed it is capable of on this media is 2.9X...what a bunch of crap! I made 2 burns at 2.4X and had more read errors than I have ever gotten before. I made a burn on my Ritek (which incidentily has a max write descriptor of 8X) only at 4X and as well was inundated with read errors.

I guess I am going to have to move my Lite-On over to this PC or spend some more money on a new drive. I just can't stand it when you are promised one thing, pay for it, and get a supposedly free "upgrade" to an inferior product...but that sounds like a discussion for a new thread!
