  1. I want to use a dvd-rw for all my recording until i figure out what i am doing but am having troubles and am very new at this. I use dvd2svcd/imagetool/dvddecrypter and am having some success at it until i get to burning. The program says the burn went fine but when i go to watch it the video/audio start to freeze etc when about 3/4 the way through. I am suspecting the media and/or burn because my files play fine off my hard drive when previewed with power DVD. If i go to erase the disc and burn a second time i get all kinds of errors like "fail to lock drive" etc Or it will say that there is an 2G audio file on the disc and it wont let me erase/format or anything. I have a LG 4081b burner/ Memorex DVD-RW/ Roxio EZ CD/DVD 6. Is there better discs, programs or whatever? Can anyone help me please? Thanks

Are you simply trying to back-up your DVD's?

  3. Yes, and also some movies from my dv camcorder. The reason I am trying to use a RW is that i am a total newbie and was making a ton of coasters so thought i would try a RW untill i get all the bugs worked out.

You'll need to lighten your load of programs for a DVD back-up. DVDShrink and DVDDecrypter are really all you need to make a back-up of a dual layer DVD.....and just DVDDecrypter if you are backing up a single layer DVD.

And here's a good guide for DV to DVD....but I've yet to try it.

I have all of the tools....used all of the tools before...just need to get my DV camera back..

  5. This is the only process that i have found so far that works for me [been trying for 2 months] and for doing my dv stuff i use studio8. The only problem that im really having now is with the r/w discs. The discs seem to work ok the first time you use them but on subsequent recordings they crash and that is the reason i want to try to erase them, but i cant get roxio to work properly in the erase/format. Going to try nero 6 trial version and see if it works better

    SCREW Roxio and SCREW Nero....
If you are talking about backing up (copying) your DVD's - DVDShrink then DVDDecrypter. DVDDecrypter will burn in ISO Mode....and the newest version of DVDShrink will create an ISO image for you from your shrunken DVD - and both are FREE.
Check out the guides for DVDShrink on the left....it is a simple program and it is highly recommended by MANY MANY people.

Oh by the way....if your LG burner is dual (+ or -) - get some +RW's and try those. And stop buying Memorsux DVD's....break that habit right now..
AND....having Roxio and Nero on the same computer is BAD NEWS.

Absolutely, lose the Memorex and try Maxell +RW's for a start. There are
other good brands too. I have just had great luck with the Maxell's. Step
1 is to find a disc that works for you.

  9. Thanks for the help so far guys. Yes my burner is a +/- I only used the memorex - ones because it was the first 1 i tried when i burnt a converted dv home movie and it played well both in my computer and my Hitachi standalone. So i went with the Memorex -RW so i could start experimenting with both backups and conversions. Im pretty sure the problem is the media because i dont have a problem playing DVD RAM discs or any CDRW's on the LG, and i cant even get scandisk to work, either the roxio one nor the nero one [separate instalations].
    Thanks again.

Memorex aren't ALL bad....but you never know if you are getting the good ones or the bad ones so I choose not to take the chance.

    For 4x DVD+RW discs, Sony=Maxell=Memorex, media RICOHJPNW11.

Does this happen with new RWs? I have found that I have to do a full reformat before I can reuse RWs (most of the time). For some reason a quick erase results in bad burns.

I always do a full erase....but I use +RW's in a DVD Recorder and sometimes switch between recording PAL and NTSC material....and the disc needs to be completely empty. Quick erase won't fool my Philips recorder.

  14. The first time i use them they are fine, its on the subsequent recordings that they screw up. They screw up so bad that i cannot even reformat them, they just error. I did manage to get 1 of them to work in Nero's scandisk and the last 40% of the disc was unreadable. My other disc wont even load properly, it says it is a blank disc with a capacity of 24 gig (lol i wish) but if you view the disk in my computer-->properties it shows a full disc with 2 gig audio file on it and a capacity of 2 gig

Try using DVDInfoPro to erase your rw....I had an rw giving me all kinds of problems, then 1 day it wouldn't even erase, I was steered toward DVDInfoPro and that fixed it for me....whynot give it a try...

  16. Thanks for the advise, really neat little program. Gave it a try but it couldnt format my discs, would get about 90% complete and then fail. No errors would come up and it would say it was finished and O.K. but its not. When i look at the disc now in "My Computer" it is a audio disc with a 2 gig capacity, and its full, and the formatting is cdfs. when i look at it in DVDinfoPro it looks like this Media Information
    Region information N/A not a DVD-VIDEO
    Media code/Manufacturer ID ProdiscDVDRW
    Format Capacity Not Formatted
    Free Blocks 1619036160
    Free Capacity 21.51GB(23.09GB
    Book Type DVD-RW
    Media Type DVD-RW
Media Id Code Speed 1.0x 1385KBps
Available Write Descriptor CLV 1.0x 1385KBps
    Write Strategy Speed 1.0x 1385KBps
    Data area starting sector 30000h
    Linear Density 0.267um/bit
    Track Density 0.74um/track
    Number of Layers 1

The other disc is just a wonky but it atleast shows it as a 4.7 gig.
