I just flashed my 109 from firmware 1.17 to firmware 1.50 and to my dismay, the rip speed has not improved at all... it's still around 4x. When I bought the unit, the box said it will read DVD's at 16X. It did not say "This drive will rip at 16X as advertised, UNLESS you are ripping a CSS encrypted DVD." That's a very important bit of info they left out.

    Okay, so three things:

    1. I don't have access to a PC
    2. I searched this forum for "rip lock" and "riplock" but found nothing relevant to the Pioneer 109.
    3. I need a rip lock remover to unleash the full power of this drive. I hear you can get 12X with it if the firmware can be hacked to trick the drive into thinking it's an A09. Suggestions?

    Thanks.

  2. There is as yet no region free firmware nor riplock removal firmware for the 109. You can get faster ripping speeds by cross-flashing to the A09 firmware. This requires a PC and a copy of DVRupdate.

You probably used the Logitec updater to get to 1.50; unfortunately it does not do cross flashing, and will not update an A09 (formerly a 109 that has been cross flashed). So once you flash into an A09, any future Pioneer upgrades (for the A09) will again need the PC approach.

A Mac flasher is in the works, but may not appear for some months.

Note: when you cross flash into the A09, the Quiet Drive feature is automatically turned on (even when put into your Mac). This is a good feature as far as listening to music or watching DVDs; but for faster ripping, you need to set the software to "Performance" while still in the PC. So you need to download the Quiet Drive utility along with the A09 1.50 firmware and DVRupdate.
