I noticed that Office Max is selling an 8X DVD burner tomorrow at $40 after rebates (DANGER WILL ROBINSON!!). I know they used to be Benq and I wondered if anyone knew what model this was?
TIA

Still a few bugs in the system...

Some are BenQ, some are Cyberdrive. Can't remember if there's a 3rd brand. If you search for khypermedia, or check the Writers page you may find all the info. I know it's been posted before. The BenQ is an 800A, the Cyberdrive is an 802D. There is a firmware update to burn -R/RW on the BenQ. I don't think Cyberdrive has anything similar. No idea how you tell which is which out of the box. No way to tell IN the box as far as I know.

The Cyberdrive is a DX082D and they are currently developing a firmware to support -r. I have a beta firmware right now that supports -r writing but it still need some work before it's released to the public. It will be a free upgrade unlike the Benq that costs $10.00, not that $10 is to much. I think the box marked Made in China are Cyberdrive and Made in Malaysia are Benq.

Made in Malaysia is the Benq.
Benq 800 can also be upgraded to 822 with a patched firmware. -
You can get it online from ComputerGeeks for $54 (no rebates).
8x DVD Writer Bundle $53.95, Jul 27
Computer Geeks has an 8x DVD+R/RW Writer for $53.95. Appears to be KHypermedia (Benq or Cyberdrive Mech). Use code: GEEKFREEMEDIA to get a free 50 pack of DVD+R media.
Downside is you won't know which MFR makes the drive until you get it. If either BenQ or Cybermedia will be fine for you, this might be a better deal.Nothing can stop me now, 'cause I don't care anymore.
