  1. Hey folks,
I am new at this VCD stuff, so I need some help. I plan on putting together video photo albums for myself and family. I've got all the software I need (Roxio CD Creator, Ulead Picture Show) thanks to all the input from VCDHelp! What I am wondering is what type of DVD player should I purchase? I don't plan on getting into digital movies quite yet and the majority of my burning will be made up of scanned photographs and digital photos. I don't know if I should buy a cheap Apex machine or go for the Pioneer DV-444. I would like my video photo albums to come out nice on my large screen TV, so if that makes a difference, please let me know. Any input would be great! Thanks.

  2. If all your doing is VCD/XVCD/SVCD stuff and little DVD, then just go with an Apex 1500D unit (about $90). Though if you want something with a little more (more for DVD viewing, progressive scan otpion, and don't mind paying like $100+ more for those options) look at the Sony DVP-NS700P ($229 online) or the new Toshiba SD-5700 ($249 online).

  3. Thanks,
I already have a Toshiba SD-2200 for playing back DVD Movies and it works fine for that but can't read CD-R or CD-RW. I will probably take your advise and go with a cheap DVD like the Apex for my video photo albums.

  4. Hmm..I have a Toshiba SD2200 and works fine with Memorex CDRW Platnium discs and just got it working with Sony and FujiFilm CD-Rs....so are you sure you tried cd-r/w media? Works great and my photo albums and XVCD I'm making with WinOnCD 3.8 look terrific, (though the SD2200 seems to lose audio sync when I fast fwd on my XVCDs, so I myself am slowly looking at that new SD5700 - has better CDR and CDRW support )

A friend of mine does have an Apex 1500D...plays everything he feeds it, just to let you know...

  5. Thanks for the advice. I never tried the Memorex. I tried a cheap brand with no luck and just figured the owners manual was correct when it said no CD-R's. I probably should have asked around. I'm gonna run out and see if I can find some Memorex. Thanks!
