  1. I am looking at a way to go straight from my DV camera to a mpg file that is ready to burn as a DVD or DVD on Cd without taking extra time to encode. I am happy with a bitrate of 4-5k so I can get at least 2 hours on a DVD. I haven't found the proper software yet to do this quickly. Any suggestions?

One way is to use the Mainconcept encoder. It will take the DV stream and encode direct to MPEG2, then you author and burn.

It works in close to real time with a fast computer. You enable buffering and 30 minute video will encode in about 35 minutes. (On my system.)

Be aware that no real-time mpeg-2 encoding program will give you the same quality results as a slower multi-pass VBR encode, regardless of bitrate.

  4. I don't know if you have Pinacle Studio 8. I have it and it is a worthless program except I can capture to mpeg 2 in realtime with bitrate around 6000K to 7000K and the picture quality looks as good as master even on very high movement home videos. I then convert audio to AC3 then author with dvdauthor then burn with nero. Works for me!
