  1. With most common DVD players able to play VCD, SVCD, DVD (DVD-R etc.)and MP3. Is it possible to burn VCD quality Mpeg1 to DVD and have it play on my new model type DVD player?

I would assume that the player would look for the footage data and not really the media it is on. Please provide info...

    Thanks in advance.

    Hy rallytbk,
Yes, but you must convert the sound to 48 hz not 44.1 hz as normally in VCD mode.

  3. Kewl, thanks for the tip guys... Now I can record "Battle of the Planets (G-Force)" and "Thundar the Barbarian" to VCDDVD for hours of entertainment.

Note: Just got Direct TV DVR and plan on capturing old "Boomerang Channel" cartoons for archive. This device works great, I only wish I could input my VCR tapes to it's harddrive to avoid wear and tear to my old tapes. Oh well, I can't have it all (just yet).

Star Wars: Clone Wars came out great as a VCD and SVCD. If ya need a copy I can up load the mpeg1 files for you guys...

    Thanks again.

It has already been established that it is okay to discuss downloading television episodes (such as Clone Wars).

As Supreme2k stated, Baldrick, the Adminsitrator of this site, says its ok to discuss here even though the act may or may not be illegal in some countries. Basically, the policy is that its a grey enough area that we'll just let the posters use their own discretion in discussing it.

I think the board rules need to be updated to make this more clear.

  7. What makes a TV episode different from a Hollywood movie? They are both copyright material. I know for a fact that this is illegal in the UK and especially the US (and im sure many other countries).

On the up side, the BBC has said "Free software is often distributed via peer to peer networks and content providers, including the BBC, are considering using P2P protocols to distribute content."

It is definitely illegal in the US, but this board can make any rules it wants and just suffer the consequences. Its just a personal decision by Baldrick.

You can legally copy broadcasts in the US, and in most other parts of the world as well. It is considered Fair Use. Distributing those copies is what is illegal.

In theory, you can record a tv episode with a VCR, and that's perfectly legal. With a movie, you're not allowed to record it, not at all.

With TV, isn't the news the only thing you can legally record on commercial channels because it is classed as Public Domain ?

Downloading wise, I agree with everyone who cannot see the difference. I have argued this point many times. They are both copyrighted. AUP states downloaded copyrighted material = warez. How are TV shows different ?
    If in doubt, Google it.

Even our local (Canadian) newcast has a disclaimer saying that you cannot rebroadcast, so it's not public domain.

Taping and watching later is merely timeshifting, perfectly legal. Lending or distributing is technically illegal.

By downloading these copies, and SAYING that you are, are you not violating the rule that says "Do NOT advocate warez. " ?

So if i record the 9 o'clock news, i have to make sure I stop the recording at 9.30, just in case BBC1 decides to show "Predator" or something afterwards?

I can only comment on US law, but it is the same in most countries. You can legally record ANYTHING broadcast on tv that you are legally entitled to watch. If you pay for the broadcast, via subscription, or you pick it up via the old rabbit ears you can record it, keep it as long as you, and then watch it ONCE. After that, you are legally supposed to erase it. Its called Time Shifting and it was held to be a Fair Use exception to copyright law in the Sony v. Universal case. If you want further information just do a web search on it, the entire case has been published online hundreds of times.

As for downloading any copyrighted material, it is illegal unless you have express permission from the copyright holder...period. As far as I'm concerned we shouldn't discuss such things on this site, but its not my decision.

Like I said in the other thread, it boils down to what Baldrick allows, since it's his site. If you don't like it, take it up with him. Personally, I don't care. I just enjoy snitching on people when they break the rules ( j/k)

Unless you have a whole bunch of VCDs and you don't have a better source, it is better just to encode to MPG-2. That's what I did with Clone Wars. I know you can get more on there with VCD, but the quality suffers way too much for my tastes.

  16. Baldrick has never said it is ok to download, upload or provide links to copyrighted material whether it be TV shows or movies, this is what he actually said.

The right to time shift doesn't extent to downloading. Time shifting allows you to do only the very same thing you would normally do, but at a later time. So the signal is beamed to your house. You can record this signal and view it later. The same cannot be said of the downloaded version. Basically all that time shifting does is allow you to hit "record."

    Hello,
Have you guys (and gals) ever heard of "tape trading"? I do it quite frequently with a show called "Mystery Science Theatre 3000". In the early days the show even ended the credits with "keep circulating the tapes". It's ok to share shows, just not make a profit on it. I also don't do the internet downloading (dialup user, no sense doing it).

Like they said you can share shows, especially the ones not commercially available (ie the ones you can't buy yet). If you stick with that guideline I think you should be ok.
    Kevin
P.S. If you can, try to stick with physical material like tape/dvd through trading sites. I believe it would be "safer" than downloading

No its not ok. If its copyrighted you can't share it without express permission. It makes no difference whether the material is commercially available or not or whether you make a profit on the trade or not. If that one particular show/series granted approval to share copies of it then that's fine, but obviously this permission is not granted for the vast majority of copyrighted material.

Yes, MST3K has ok'd trading nonreleased shows. Though, if trading is so "unethical" how come hollywood hasn't cracked down on tape trading like riaa has on the mp3 scene? Anyway, just another option for those looking for alternatives.

By the way, Adam, are you really that interested in copyright law? It seems like you've read all the documenation out there. Maybe it's time you took a break and started reading some fiction ??
    Kevin
P.S. Nothing wrong with reading legal documents, just seems a little boring though.

I didn't say it was unethical, that's a matter of opinion. But it is illegal. "Hollywood" spends millions of dollars each year cracking down on this type of behavior. The fact that the legal pursuit of mp3 traders is more visible is because there are exponentially more cases of copyright infringement with music then with movies. (as far as trading is concerned.) Its much easier to download a 1-5MB song then it is to download a 1 gig movie, or to physically trade tapes/disks with someone.

I'm not quite a lawyer yet but I do currently work for an Intellectual Property law firm and will be licensed to practice by this time next year. Boring? Lots of people would call everything discussed here at videohelp boring. To each their own, plus in my case it pays the bills.

    Hello,
Sorry Adam, didn't mean to insult you at all by calling it boring. I do agree with you about others perception about this place possibly being "boring" (though I'm here everyday and can't get enough). By the way, I buy tons of movies all the time so its not like I'm slipping under the radar, and I don't have broadband.
    Kevin
P.S. Good luck with the lawyer stuff.

Well i downloaded it through emule, i even had protowall running. but all they did was tell surewest to tell me to stop, but what about stuff like the tv show "sliders" wich airs once in a blue moon on scifi and there is no dvd set for it, so why would they even care if i downloaded it, they wouldnt make any money anyways!
