I currently have a Hi8 camcorder and am set up for analog capture on my PC for further processing to a DVD. Will I get significantly better video quality on my final DVD if I invest in a MiniDV camcorder, transfer files via firewire, and do the processing steps to make a DVD?

Thanks for putting up with a newbie question!

  2. Since you have a GREAT capture card.. ATI AIW with theater chip. I would use ATI MMC and go analouge capture (MPEG-2) 720x480 with average bitrate 6500K and max 7500K. Just connect the comera and capture. You will like the results. the files are now in MPEG-2 so converting to DVD has no re-encoding needed. Just author and then burn the DVD. Then settings will give you like 2 hours per DVD. You can get 3-4 hours if you capture at 352x480 avg 2800 max 4000K. The picture will be slighty not as sharp as DVD but on most TV's it won't be noticable. Try if you like it.
