Hi,
I have a DivX player at home, but all of my movie downloads are Xvid. So I convert them to DivX using VirtualDub. I've noticed that after converting, the movie loses some of its quality.
my question is, how can I convert without loosing quality from the original file, and still fit into one 700 MB disc.
Thanks in advance.

Answer: You cant, re-encoding the video is almost always going to cause some loss of quality.

What player do you have? Have you tried playing XviD in it? If it doesn't work, have you tried changing the fourCC of the file from DivX to XviD? I am thinking that since they are both MPEG-4, you may be able to "trick" your player into playing XviD, thereby saving time and quality. -
Thanks for the fast replies.
the DVD player is Philips DVP630.
Some of the Xvid movies I've played are not being played correctly, somtimes the movie has all sorts of distorsions and white dots in it.
Can this be fixed using the technique you've suggested? How can this be done?
thanks! -
The technique suggested is only to allow you to play it in a player that supposedly only accepts DivX.
I am no expert in this area, but you could try opening your XviD file in VirtualDub and telling it to scan for bad frames. This will highlight any problems that could cause sporadic curruption of the image. Otherwise, it may simply be the source that the XviD was made from. -
Is it in the AUP to jump on everyone who writes "download" ?

try changing the codec used to divx using nics fourcc changer
start/all programs/xvid/ nics fourCC changer
some downloaded files may actually be divx but as new xvid codec releases decode divx so well the person who uploaded the file's computer may have told the true divx file to be decoded by xvid (intentionally/unintentionally?)
make sure you change the codec before burning as if burnt onto nonrewritable media i dont think the default codec can be changed without pulling it back onto the pc hard drive then changing it -
