  1. Hi all!
I have recently bought the Plextor ConvertX PX-M402U.
I'm generally satisfied with picture quality (my Pentium3 1000 works great even with "High Quality" profile) but have a problem: the MP4 format (with or without DivX compression) can't be opened with my VirtualDub.
I would "cut" commercials away from a movie, but don't want to render into another format to do this.
Even worse, MP4 (DivX or not) files made with the ConvertX claim to be certified by DivX, but actually can't be played by my Philips DVD737 player: is there a quick solution?
All I have to do is capture a lot of old VHS tapes (1200 or more)
The "MPEG4 Extended Play" profile should store about 115 minutes of video on a standard 700MB CD, but the player doesn't accept this at the moment: "CODEC not supported".
    Help please!

    Thanks!

There is a new driver released by Plextor on July 9 2004 that addresses this Virtualdub issue. It's on their website.

  3. Thanks! I didn't see it because the european site hasn't been updated.
I will download an try it today.

For other users: check www.plextor.com site and select "Americas" instead of "Europe".

Check on DIVX hardware forum for players' compatibility. I think the polaroid and previous model of philips play covertx divx files fine.

The audio seems to be the area where the incompatiblity occurs.
From what i've read you can upgrade the creator2 to add MP3 audio support for about $15 or so. This will add new profiles to capture divx files with mp3 audio. Some divx players seem to like divx with mp3 better than mp2 audio.

Also you'll get a better chance with divx than mpeg4 as far as compatibility is concerned.

  5. Thanks very much!
Unfortunately I've downloaded all updates, the latest version of VirtualDub and the MPG4 codec, but nothing changed: VirtualDub is still refusing to open the DivX files made with ConvertX saying that MP4S codec is not supported.
I can capture to VCD format, but by doing so only 3 movies will fit on a DVD. With MPG4 I would be able to store much more movies (using the "Extended Play" profile, since quality is not an issue with old videotapes).

BTW is there another free application I can use for simple Divx converting and trimming?

    Thanks
