  1. I recently purchased both the ever-popular Philips DVP642 DVD Player ($70 at Target) and the highly rated Toshiba 27" flatscreen TV ($350 at BB).

The DVD player works great! Hasn't had a problem with any of the movies I've thrown at it. I'm very impressed (just wish there was a custom zoom setting that would allow me to eliminate the giant black bars on some of the widescreen-encoded divx movies I have).

My question: the DVD player is connected to the TV via component cables (Toshiba calls it "Colorstream"). Toshiba also advertises this TV with the byline "Velocity scan modulation increases definition for HDTV and progressive scan". However -- when I switch the DVD player to "progressive scan" mode, the TV can't seem to handle it (and it looks like I'm trying to watch a PAL movie on a NTSC TV or scrambled late-night tv).

Is there something else I need to do? This is a pretty popular TV -- does anyone else here have it? Know if it actually supports progressive scan?

    Thanks so much!

No, that TV does not support progressive scan.
