Hi, is there a way to author 352 x 480 video files in adobe encore? when i try to import my video files that are in this resolution it tells me it only accepts 720 x 480, 720 x 486 and 704 x 480....
Thanx In Advance

yes i have found the same problem. it only accepts full d1. to do half or quarter i use tmpgenc dvd author. many people dont like adobe encore. i still use it a lot but wish they would add the other resolutions.
-
In a nutshell, 352x480 is not a DVD standard resolution. Encore is strict in that it only accepts resolutions and bitrates that are of DVD standard. Although you can use other programs to convert lower resolutions to DVD std. resolutions, the quality will obviously suffer with blocky or pixilated results.
Encore is meant for professional DVD creation with the highest quality output in mind. A lot of people don't like encore because most don't really know how to use it (I was one of those people at first). Yes, it has bugs but keep in mind that encore is the first version and will improve greatly in time. I find it to make the most professional looking dvd's than any other program I have used provided you stick to DVD specs. -
352x480/576 is dvd standard.
and this isn't svcd authoring so I'm moving it. -
i totaly agree with encore being good. it is my favourite authoring app.
but check the forums. 1/2 and 1/4 are infact part of the dvd spec!!!
it is the only thing encore is missing. although i only use full d1 95% of the time as it is indeed the best quality sometimes i will accasionaly use 1/2 or 1/4 to fit a lot on 1 dvd for friends or demos -
I had the same problem and it is a problem. There are only a few video resolutions in the DVD standard either Mpeg2 or Mpeg1
720 X 480 - NTSC.
704 X 480 - NTSC.
352 X 480 - NTSC.
352 X 240 - NTSC.
Encore should support them all. Thanks for starting this thread. I thought I just didn't see the option in encore until I saw it confirmed here.
BTW: There is a good reason for supporting low resolutions. It lets you get at least 8 hours of video on a dvd at vhs quality. Some people want this. -
Just use DVD Patcher and patch the first header of your MPG you are going to import as asset to reflect 720x480. I used to capture from Dish Network at 480² and use that since it was the closest to the 544x480 I found Dish airing and my DVD players accepted such.
Now I capture at full D1 since DVDRs are so cheap these days. I no longer care to push storage quantity over picture quality. -
That sounds really strange. You can just tell Adobe Encore that a 352x480 res mpeg2 is really a 720x480 and it wont have any problem with it.
No offense, have you really tried this in Adobe Encore.
Did some programmer at Adobe have to decide between a coffee break or full res support? it sounds like it would take 5 minutes to add the feature to Encore. -
Because ... Encore ... sucks...
It was sloppily put together and I doubt they even asked anybody involved with video for input putting it together. A program that does not support the full spec is quite honestly trash.
It's broken .. incomplete ... half done.

The "Total Training" series for Adobe Encore seems to spend more time on explaining the bugs and nuances of the program, more than how to have fun and produce something useful..
Very surprised from Adobe... -
Has someone tried 1.5? Is this still the case that it won't support 352x480?
-
Yes I have 1.5. It just doesn't allow the 352x480 res to import.
I think most people just assume Encore is an industry standard like other Adobe products. Even the Adobe Encore DVD product write-up on this website claims that Encore supports Mpeg1. Encore doesn't support it.
Lordsmurf: I follow your website religiously. You placed an Encore Authoring guide up. Wasn't that an endorsement? -
LordSmurf: You didn't answer so I found this response from you on another thread.
Sonic's DVDit! PE -or- TMPGEnc DVD Author ... for 99% of my work
... have no need for anything else at this time, although I have Sonic's ReelDVD and Adobe Encore at my disposal. Also have access to a Mac user and DVD Studio Pro 1.x if I need anything REALLY fancy. -
Because the Adobe employees are in fact programers, not multimedia specialists. I have access to Adobe, and just talked the other week with a guy who is part of the Adobe Audition team. I asked him why they suport mp3 pro (not very used by profesionals), but not ac3. He didn't even know what ac3 stands for. I "opened his eyes" to understand, and now ac3 support is on the list. Most probably, the next version will support it. I guess that it is the same situation with the Encore team. Somebody needs to "open their eyes".

Thats weird, but believable. I've worked on projects where I didn't care what the customers wanted. It's not the best way to go though.
Even so there should be a marketing team that keeps on top of this stuff. -

DVDit! PE is my weapon of choice. The lack of mulitplexed MPEG file support can get annoying, but I demux and live with it. One VTS is also not the greatest, but I'll survive. Just means I need to plan projects smoothly to avoid these issues.
TMPGEnc DVD Author is my "butt-wiping" program. When I have stubborn source or made a mistake, maybe even need multi VTS, I use this one. It's great for menu-less authoring and for quickie projects where simple menus are acceptable. My biggest complaint is the poor color selection layers and the font has HORRIBLE aliasing artifacts. Most fonts cannot be used, only the most simple ones used very large.
ReelDVD is useful, but a pain in my side. I use it when needed. I was actually hoping I could sell it off when I bought DVDit! 5. But noce luck there. I almost feel abused when I'm done using this on a project. My guide on this may be scrapped in the end.
DVDit! 5 looked good, passed all my MPEG-2 tests, made some great MPEG-1 DVDs, made a few great slide-show discs ... and then 100% fell to trash when I tried to use it with ANYTHING I have MPEG-2 (any encoder you can imagine, and hardware encoded file). I address this on another thread. Complete garbage, I filed a chargeback on the credit card. Sonic support did not respond, and the phone was always busy. My guide on this will definitely be deep-sixed. I was going to make it the same day I made the MPEG-2 disc, I was snapping images as I went along. I was double-pissed that day.
DVD-LAB does not make compliant discs, so I have an issue with it. But, it may be my only hope for easier authoring to VTS and with a few advanced options. I'll just eat compliancy issues. I'm hoping PRO gets here soon. I'm having difficulty making this work well, but I'll catch it.
Scenarist and Maestro. If the price does not scare you off, the complexity will. I just recently got to use these at a friend's office. I was clueless. No way. I'd need a course for those. Authoring should not take all day long. I already did that at editing. Just let me put it on the damned disc and get it done with.
Ulead DVD Workshop 1. A fancy, more crash-happy version of DVDit! I have not used version 2 yet, not beyond a test. I may purchase this in the future. Maybe not. I'm not impressed by it too much.
SpruceUp shows it's age. Huge pain to operate, chapter point selection can crash the application.
DVD Studio Pro. Very nice. But I don't have a Mac here. I take it to a friend that uses a Mac-based studio if I need anything fancy done. He's got the expensive goodies that I don't have. I stumble through the software. I need his help to do well at it.
DVDAuthor with GUI. Look interesting, but doesn't look hearty enough for me.
There's not much else out there. DVDit! 5 looked to be the perfect application, and tested as such, but it turned into a huge disaster.
