If I capture a AVI file as 704x480, perform all my editing, then use TMPGEnc to re-encode it to 720x480 mpeg2 or avi. Will I loose anything in the process? Or am I missing something simple I should know?

  2. Technically, anytime you encode, you lose something. Whether that is something you can visually determine in the result depends. TMPGENC has "keep aspect ratio" option that will allow you to reencode at 704x480, however, keep the aspect ratio of 720x480 so you dont "lose anything".

Also, 704x480 IS a dvd standard. You could just reencode to what the original is and burn to dvdr and it should play just fine. You could also encode down to 352x480 48khz audio, which is also a dvd standard. If your source is VHS, it is already at 352x480 (basically, you were arguably overkilling your capture when you did it at 704x480). "Most" people, including myself do not see a visual difference when viewing a 352x480. Some people have reported issues when displayed on a widescreen TV. I do not see a difference on my 32" 2003 purchased Toshiba TV. One other benefit to 352x480 is you get to ramp the Bit rate up higher since you are spreading them over the 720 (or 704) lines.

    Hello,
For dvd conversion ALWAYS capture in 720x480 (or half d1 specs) if at all possible. Why convert when you don't need to? I believe I've read here there is always some loss when converting files. Just set your card to 720x480 first and save yourself the hassle.
