Hi, searched around but couldnt find exactly what I was looking for.

I have a DVD quality .mov which is 1.3GB, is it possible to split this in half and convert to SVCD to go on 2 700MB CD's without having the res lowered to like 320? (its currently 1024x400 or something) As I see it, splitting it in half will allow it to fit onto 2 CD's, but, I want to be able to play it in my stand alone DVD player while keeping it in the almost DVD quality. Is this possible?

    Thanks

why dont you make a dvd instead ?

but non the less - just because the qt file is 1.3 gigs , doesnt mean that you can nessessarly make 2 cd's svcd ..

they are two different compression formats ..

and qt could be any number of codecs ..

    but svcd is mpeg2 ..

how long is this video ?

I dont have a DVD recorder yet as I am still deciding on what 1 would be best to get. The qt movie is just under 1 hour 45 mins.

    Thanks

then you will need to encode it at a avg. 1830 bitrate and split it over 2 cd's (80 minute)

you can use tmpgenc for this -- which also can resize your mov file to 480x480 and add the top and bottom borders - see guides to the left ..

you will lose quality though compared to the orig.

why not encode it to 352*480/576 so that if he does get a dvd burner or recorder all he would have to do is resample the audio and it would be a dvd compliant file?

Thats what I would do...as a matter of fact that is what i am still doing as I don't have a dvd burner yet but am hoping to get one in the future.

    Good Luck to ya HBAndrew!

It's going to take more than two CDs to span 1:45 runtime in SVCD format.

why ? avg. 1830 bitrate is ok ....

well 3 would be better - but 2 is ok with good quality source and encoder

True. It's just a subjective quality thing for me I guess. 45-48 minutes is about the most I ever go on SVCD. And to be honest, the only time I really put stuff on CD these days I'm using half D1 because it's usually something trivial that I don't (at the time) feel is a justified waste of a DVD blank but might want to keep around to convert later "just in case".

Re-reading the original post, this is a conversion so quality probably really isn't much of an issue.
