  1. I authored a dvd, and when I put it in my standalone player, everything looks fine. It starts playing, but after 5-10 seconds, the video pauses and locks up. I press play, nothng happens. If I press menu, it will go back to the menu. This happens even if I skip to different chapters. It will start playing that chapter, but then stops (video is still/paused).

    Anyone know why this happens?

Can you provide information about your DVD player (model), your DVD burner, the type of disc used and the program you used to burn it? Try adding this information to your profile.

Anyway, if your DVD player plays commerical DVDs fine and doesn't play authored discs, try switching formats (from DVD+R to DVD-R, for example). Another factor is the program you use for burning.

You can lookup information your DVD player by clicking on the side menu. This will help you to determine what kind of disc to get for it.

The most common program used for burning is usually Nero or Easy CD/DVD Creator. I've had better luck switching to CopyToDVD to burn my discs.

    DVD Player is Pioneer DV-333

Ive never had any trouble playing DVD-R before, in fact, thats the only media I use.

The disc doesnt do this on my computer, so it must be the way the dvd was authored.

As louthewiz asked, are you using cheap DVD-Rs? In that case, you'll end up with at least a few coasters in each spindle that you buy. This is probably the case if you've been able to author DVDs before the same way you did this one.

This may or may not be true, but in my experience, if the DVD was burned on a certain drive, it will probably be read by that drive without any trouble (even if the DVD has errors or is outside spec). Also, if you have authored it before the same way, it is probably the media.

The DVD drives used in computers are much superior to the ones in a standalone DVD player and will be able to read the worst of DVD media.

The fact that the DVD player will play menus supports the idea that your media was inferior. However, make sure your DVD player doesn't have a problem (my Pioneer went out and refused to play DVDs, but would play VCDs, SVCDs and CDs)
