  1. For DVD-R and DVD+R, question on both formats....

What gives the discs different write speeds? 2x 1x 4x etc.

I am not talking about the burners, although I would like to know that too.

Is it the dye? It's thickness? It's composition?

    Balance and dye stability.

The faster an object rotates, the more it tends to wobble. Wobble must be minimal to write in the wobble groove of the media.

The dye must also be able to stand the pressure/heat (or rather, potential "lower heat") of high speed writing.

    Pressure?
I don't how else to say it. Dye melting is the side effect. I'd have to refer back to some documentation on optical electronics, but don't have the time. It's an interesting thing to research.
