I know some if not a lot of us here are gamers as well as video nerds... but does anyone here play BFVietnam??

I remember seeing someone mention that they play BF1942 - made by the same company as BFV.

I find that the best online games have been on the UKEA servers (England for those who don't know what the UK stands for )....

My BFV name is "Death from Above" - a cheesy name that I started using in BF1942 - my favorite pack was the sniper set. I would set myself up somewhere high with good sightlines and pick off other players from above - hence the name.

Anyway - I usually end up spending about 2 hours a night, for 3 or 4 nights a week playing this online.... it's pretty intense.

    Anyone else here play it?

When i play online i'm just "Edd", but don't go on too often - LAN is more fun. i'm off to multiplays' i21 in august, 4 solid days of gaming.

That's cool. Just make sure you take a break in those 4 days! I've read the stories of some people in Korea that spend so much time in front of their computers playing games that somebody finally poked them with a stick to find out that they died right there in their chair playing the game!

They wouldn't stop to go to the bathroom and their organs just shut down.... or something like that.

Anyway, I don't have much oppurtunity for the LAN gaming - not too many of my friends are into the gaming part of computers. For them it's just email and web browsing.

I like to hop online and shoot it out after the kids and the wife are in bed. A couple of hours of uninterrupted chaos in the jungles! Downside is the loss of a couple hours of sleep each night that I do this.... like last night... my butt is dragging today....

FarCry is a great game, I am having alot of fun with it right now, even though the save system is very fustrating.

I do net get into on-line games, I not crazy about playing with people I do not know.

I got Painkiller a week ago, mindless shooting fun, good graphics.

I started playing shooters with the Rainbow Six series, briefly got into CS before getting sick of whining 1337 kiddies telling me I'm cheating, then back to Clancy's games. Then BF1942 came out and everything changed. Finally I could jump in a fighter or command a tank or grab a jeep and start running fools over. Vanilla BF was great, I got all the expansions. But then Desert Combat started getting popular and I latched onto that. I picked up BFV in the hope that the better engine would yield a better mod of DC. I don't really enjoy playing BFV that much. Single player stinks because the AI can see through grass and stuff but you can't. They also have the insane ability to lob RPG rounds over hills and still hit you on the first shot. In fact the AI sucks. Online play is only slightly more fun because I'm good at hiding, though I miss the faster pace of DC.

Far Cry is fantastic. The engine is so refined that I get far superior performance from that than I do BFV and with far better visuals. The gameplay is like a dumbed down Ghost Recon but I love the ability to crawl around and hide. Unfortunately I suffer the same fate there as I did with CS so I stopped playing it online.

I think I'm going to get back into DC since I seemed to be more welcome there. I like being a support character there, like the medivac pilot or the AC-130 pilot. I'm also pretty darn good on the run with an M1A1. My favorite vehicles are the A-10, AH-6, and the Howitzer. Don't let me get near artillery with good spotters

Maybe we should get a group going from this forum for some fun. Someone here has got to have something better than my 2000/1000 DSL connection to host. If not my PC makes for a really great server

  8. Hope this is not considered hijacking. I want real gamers advice
on a cheap game video card. I have just bought a mpeg 4
player and bits and bobs for my home theatre so I'm on
a tight budget (plus I want to buy a top PCI Express card when
    they come out)

    So do I get a 2nd hand Geforce ti4200 ultra, a cheap FX5600
or ATI (I was not impressed with the 9600 chipset) ?
I want to play Far Cry and Half Life II when it comes out.
    p4 2.4Ghz system.

    - BACK ON TOPIC -

As for online games, I have yet to try BF Vietnam but have had
fun with the desert campaign and, of course, lots of fun with
oldies like Return to WOlfenstein & Medal of Honor. I only
get to play every now and then

Is it just me or are their others that just love using silenced weapons?

tomshardware did a VGA chart (part three is the most recent) that gives you a good idea what to aim for. a second hand 9700 pro is excellent value for money and DX9. i've got a ti4400 and it's pretty good (and benches similar to a fx5700) but the lack of DX9 will become a problem when half life 2 comes out - i imagine i'll be buying a new card for that one

I played the Desert Combat mod for about a week - then it began giving me more headaches than was worth my time in troubleshooting so I gave it up. I loved the modern weapons that they had in it and it appears to have inspired Dice/EA to make an official version. They announced not too long ago that this fall they will introduce Battlefield 2. (based on more modern day weaponry). Guess I'll be shelling out $50 this fall when that hits the shelves!

Hardcore - when you get back up and running, I'll keep an eye out for you. I play on the EA public servers mostly - the ones from the UK. There seems to be better players and action on those servers as compared to the nit-wits who log into the US based ones. That would be cool to have a Videohelp.com shootout online.... if anyone else is up for it.

As for Rainbow 6 and Far Cry - I'll have to check them out if I get time. I can only imagine how little sleep I would get if I had 3 or 4 of these games to play!

Clancy's games are tough. They aren't for those online players with short attention spans. Depending on the game a round can last upwards of 20 minutes, most taking up around 5-10. Once you're dead, and it only takes one well-placed shot or two otherwise, you're done for the round and just have to watch the others play. Ghost Recon is similar but you're in the woods more and it's a lot easier to hide and sneak around (snipers get ghillie suits). It's near impossible to just "run and gun" because your shots would be all over the place. However if you get really good at these you'll dominate the simple shooter like BF and its versions, Far Cry, CS, and so on. CoD and Far Cry are about the closest I've seen to difficulty approaching R6 or GR and they're still pretty far off.

Do any Rogue Spear players remember playing bunkers with "no crossing allowed"? Those were the days

Hijacked this thread should rename it to "FPS Anonymous"

the BF-fest at the weekend we were playing rounds lasting about 25 minutes, tickets were set to something like 500%

It's most fun to play about 5 players versus 12 players with plenty of time to spare. as long as you work well you can still win with just 5. good fun

I dunno, we were doing 24 player LAN games of Gazala and and El Alamein with Desert Combat and that was a lot of fun. We had two even teams and everyone had an assigned position. I was an attack chopper pilot for both because apparently my unorthodox approach to flying whirlybirds causes people to miss me a lot. I felt bad for my gunny though because we were moving too much for him to open up with the gatling gun. It's a bit harder to hover in DC than it is with the helo model in BFV otherwise the gat would have been puttin' some hurt on the other team. Those new AH-6 fast-attack birds are a lot more fun, plus I can move another person someplace quick. Excellent choice for planting snipers and spotters. I'd run a sniper out to the hills on the other side of the base on El Alamein and have him spot their base while our artillery shelled the **** out of their paddock. I'd just hover out of sight and take out whatever escaped

I was having fun with BFV and using the Huey to pick things up. That is neat but is it really useful at all in online play? It makes the bird so slow and clumsy. It is kinda fun to play that map with the monastery on the one hill and the artillery on the other hill with the bridge in between and come in with the gunship playing Ride of the Valkyries. Also the napalm bombs are pretty neat to watch form near you. It'd be nice to incorporate some of those changes into DC, or perhaps BF2 will be enough. I hope Trauma, the makers of DC, get a lot of credit for BF2. It looks like EA is using a lot of their models for it.

  16. Now that is something I wish I could do fly those choppers, you see the people who are good in them and they are unstoppable.

I always seem to pick up six people, realise I am about to stack it, parachute out and all the others die, oops

  18. They sure do

What I think is really good is how you can add your own music when you are in the vehicles and how me and the missus have different things. I am driving round listening to some angry metal and she is driving round listening to Britney Spears .

sniping is good. the level with the train tracks is a great laugh - shoot off people's knees!
Berlin as anti-tank is sweet. get on the first floor of a ruined building, listen out for the rumble and pop a rocket on that tank! also great when other smartass players walk up behind you and you knock em down with a rocket to the face

my pet peeve with both BF1942 and BFV are the idiots who just camp out near a spawn point and strafe the area when anyone appears....

It turns a game into no fun at all.... but I have ways of dealing with little piss ants like that... but I won't mention what!

I was checking out a site that tracks the stats from BF42 and BFV as well as some other online games... http://bftracks.net/appl/bft/Home/view

It's pretty cool for keeping track of how you match up. I had to change my BFV name as it appears to be popular... there were over 50 other "Death from Above" players on there so I couldn't figure out which one was me.

Helos take a little to get used to. The ones in BFV are a little easier to handle because they're not as quick and they will right themselves somewhat if you get close to a hover and let off on the stick. However we've found that it's close to impossible to fly helos without a joystick with throttle control. I've got my trusty Sidewinder Precision 2 for all aerial combat. It has 3 buttons and a hat for the thumb so there is the secondary trigger, bail, and chute for the buttons. Allows me to get safely out of most wrecks. The way I fly helos is to constantle circle and swoop around the target. I'm getting better at sliding too. The AH-6 is usually small and quiet enough to be overlooked and I can hide just about anywhere with one of those. Then all of a sudden I'll pop up with the chainguns and drop whatever is in sight.

Spawn campers are lame unless they're trying to cap a flag. On our LAN games we prohibit camping within the boundaries of a non-captureable base. We allow spawn camping on enemy flags that can be capped though. It's when there is only one spawn for a team and the guy is camping it that it's unfair. If you spawn someplace other than the main base and there's a guy there with a SAW and you just keep spawning there and getting killed it's your own dumb fault. Spawn at another place and come in behind the guy, at least you should know where he is by then. We make exceptions for enemy scouts. If they're sneaky enough we let them plant cameras on the enemy base but as soon as they're "tagged" they have to allow the person who found them to execute them for espionage. It actually made for a really fun gameplay dynamic at our last LAN.

Everything I have read on card suitability for these games (and Doom 3)says go high end; 5700 Ultra ot 9600 XT is an entry level. I also would wait until the games actually come out as I went and bought a great card last October in anticipation and I am still waiting. That's the last time I ever do that.
Still a few bugs in the system...
