  1. I am looking to buy a new DVD player. I have a Panasonic RV32 that I am pleased with but it has trouble playing some of my DVD's that have the self adhesive labels on them. The Xbox plays them all fine so I think something with more of a computer based drive would work. I have my eye on a Pioneer DV-333 and was wondering if anyone has this player and how it handles labeled disc.

  2. Stick with the Panasonic model you have, or buy something similar to that one. X-box will eventually have trouble playing labeled DVDs, but will initially work, until about half way through the movie. It generates a lot of heat, as do all "computer based drives". I've found that the cheaper the DVD player is, the more likely it will play labeled discs. I work in a University Media Center and all of our players are the RV-32s. We also apply labels to commercial and burned discs and the Panasonics seem to be the most reliable for successful playback. We won't replace a disc until those players have trouble playing it.

Pioneers are great, but I would hold on to the one you already have for playing discs with labels. It's not the greatest quality player, but at least you'll have something to play the labeled discs. If you're out looking for a new player, I'd forget about label compatability and focus more on finding one with the features and quality you want, and use the old player if the new one doesn't like the labels.

    hope this helps.
