  1. Forgive me if this is in the wrong forum.

It appears that TMPGEnc Plus XPress or 3.0 is not as good as 2.5. I've seen some negative comments on it in the tools section. Most complain about the activation feature, but a few say the program is great and had no problem with that feature.

Can anyone who has successfully used both give me their opinions on which is better? I ask because I really want to encode a file that is going to be around 8.5GB to go on a dual layered DVD in the future. This is an e-mail exchange between me and Pegasys Inc.

Has the audio encoder and speed improved in 3.0? Some have said that you lose some of the features and functionality of 2.5. Is that true? If so, what is lost?

">I was wondering if version 2.5 will be updated so that the disc capacity screen can show up to at least 8500MB instead of 4500MB like the current version. I ask this because I plan to start making dual layer DVD's with a dual layer DVD writer.

    > I want to encode a two hour movie at the highest possible bitrate, and I know that dual layered DVD's can store up to 8.5 GB. However, the Wizard only can display up to 4500MB. I only use the wizard mode to see how much space I'm taking up and then I go back and adjust my own settings. I would like to see the disk space in the wizard be able to display up to 8500MB since that would show the full capacity of a dual layered DVD. That way, I can be sure my bitrate does not cause the file to be over 8500MB.

I will give the information to the developers and they will have a look at it.

Otherwise, our new version of TMPGEnc 3.0 XPress has a interface of that, It is a TMPGEnc version optimized for XDVD and Dual Layer DVD.

We also provide our customer a free 14 days trial version, you can download a trial version for test if your PC and system environment could work well with the TMPGEnc 3.0 XPress, the page is below:

I would really hate to buy another encoder just for dual layer since I'm pretty comfortable with version 2.5.

    Thanks.

  2. As far as I can see it's basically the same but with a stupid newbie-style frontend added.

Video output is no better or faster.. just pretty graphics on the buttons...

  3. Thanks for the information. I hope version 2.5 is upgraded. I may also look at a bitrate calculator to see if that helps.

  4. I can't use it because I use the D2V extensions from DVD2AVI for ripping directly from DVDs to make many MPGs. 3.0 Express does not support that feature when I tried it (2 months ago)
