My DVD looks like this
VTS_02_1.VOB
VTS_02_0.BUP
VTS_01_3.VOB
VIDEO_TS.BUP
VTS_01_4.VOB
VIDEO_TS.IFO
VTS_01_0.BUP
VTS_01_6.VOB
VTS_01_8.VOB
VTS_02_0.IFO
VTS_01_0.VOB
VTS_01_1.VOB
VTS_01_7.VOB
VTS_01_5.VOB
VTS_01_0.IFO
VTS_01_2.VOB
(Not in that order, I selected all in the video_ts and pasted here, the order changed for some reason)
Can I demux all the vobs, reencode the video to half D1, and remux? Will the dvd work or would the ifo or bup files need editing?
This is that football dvd which looks terrible after dvd2onex...

nope the IFO and BUP files would need to be re-created with something similiar to IFOEdit (and as everyone knows there is no mac equivalent)
As below, so above and beyond, I imagine
drawn outside the lines of reason.
Push the envelope. Watch it bend.
Over thinking, over analyzing separates the body from the mind. Withering my intuition leaving all these opportunities behind. -
As Bile says, it's really not that simple. In your place, I'd try DVDRemaster in downsizer mode, which reencodes the video at a lower bitrate, often yielding much better results than DVD2OneX or DVDRemaster in requantize mode.
I like systems, their application excepted. (George Sand, translated from French), "J'aime beaucoup les systèmes, le cas d'application excepté." -
Thanks for the input guys, I will try dvdremaster again, although my one previous try with it on an 8 gig DVD produced results that were no better than dvd2onex (and in dark scenes, slightly worse). Maybe it will do better with brightly lit fast moving scenes
Will report back later! -
Make sure you give downsizer mode a try. It often makes nice quality where requantize mode and DVD2OneX are unwatchable.

Update:
I finally got around to trying DVDRemaster's downsizer on this problem DVD again. After 28 hours of processing, the results are extremely mixed. On the plus side, the artifacts produced by dvd2onex (especially visible in the grass and the crowd) are much reduced. However on the minus side, there are hundreds of little 'freezes' throughout the video, where the video stops for a split second and random macroblocks cover the entire screen.
Also the menus look terrible with random glitches and green lines all over the place (although presumably I could avoid this next time by not checking the 'recompress menus' checkbox). -
PS: I realise that at $699 it is waaay overkill (and it looks incredibly complicated), but out of interest, does anyone know if TFDVDEdit for the Mac can do what IFOEdit for the PC does? (It is supposed to be, among other things, an IFO editor).

TFDVDEdit looks like a great addition to DVD Studio Pro, but is overkill for most projects, and I can't see how editing IFOs would help you solve your problem. It does seem to have some IFO editing capabilities (for adding custom complex DVD navigation), as well as the capability for advanced DVD authoring functions, such as making different 'stories', which would play additional content on a DVD (like having both a theatrical release version and director's cut version on the same DVD), while reusing the same video files where possible for saved space. This is only for professional DVD authoring, and priced accordingly. Thanks for the heads-up, though, as it's a pretty interesting piece of software I had never come across before.

ffmpegX can reencode the vobs to half d1 just fine. The problem is doing so but retaining the complex menu structure of this disc

I'm referring to the split feature, which I didnt make clear. If it looks bad after DVD2OneX, re-encoding isnt going to make it look better, just probably a bit fuzzy and it will take a good long while. Sometimes you just have to put things on two discs and focus on enjoying them...

I thought the split feature only worked for movie only?
