Just got my Sony DRU-700A today, no double layer disc come with the burner, even in retail box?

Cheap package, cheap software and cheap drive, Made in China.

The DRU-500A I got last time is much better, at least Made in Jap.

Very disappointed from Sony this time.

If you want to get this burner, think twice!

  2. I don't think there's any dual layer media on the market yet. The drives are here, but the media companies haven't cranked them out yet.

    Oh, the DRU-700a isn't actually made by Sony. It's just a re-branded Lite-On.

I think it is premature to say this drive sucks. It looks like it needs some firmware upgrades, etc. As far as getting a free DL disk, I have never gotten a free disk with any burner I purchased. So far this burner has reliablly burned + and - 8x media that plays in all my set top players. Small problem though, it is actually burning 6x Hope this is fixed with updated firmware soon.

You create your own reality. Interested in media servers and HTPC? Can we talk?

  5. Sony DVD burner's are nothing but junk. I had two DRU500AX both could not burn crap right. Very picky with media. Went back to my Pioneer AO4 no problem even today. Upgaded to a LG 4081 no problem's. Plus LG burn's DVD-RAM and work's as a removable hard drive. You can download software right on the DVD-RAM.

I got a 2.4X DVD+RW Sony brand blank disc when I purchased a DRU500A and this was a refurb too!

Oh Great One, I am not worthy. :P How can we help it if you have a "problem" burning basic media with a basic drive. I had a pioneer, and it was a great burner. No real problems with the Sony yet.

What makes you think the minus camp will go DL?

I'm waiting for LG to bring out a decent drive that does any DL media. I've had nothing but excellent experiences with the GSA-4040B.

No problems with the Sony DRU500A drive here.

They have to in order to stay competitive. Also, they are working on DL, but they are slower at implementing it. They had a demo of -R DL at CES2004, but that was a test model using a firmware upgraded Pioneer A06 or 07 or something like that. I don't know why minus is taking so long. They either don't have everything together or they are going to see how DL pans out. I think it is probably the first reason though. Similar to BluRay and HD-DVD. HD-DVD is the standard, but BluRay is much further along and would actually be the format of choice I would go with.

Anyway, I had no Idea the Sony was a rebadged Liteon. Does Pioneer also use other companies as well and just put their name on it?

I honestly feel that I've had enough -R media that no matter what they do in DL, I will support +R DL anyway. The only reason I use -R at all is because it is all that my current player(s) support.

    > Yeah, Lite-on sucks too.

Everything sucks for somebody. I tried a Pioneer A06 a few months ago. Burned great- the burned disks would play on one of my 3 DVD players. Tried a TDK burner- the burned disks wouldn't play on anything I have except the burner that burned them.

I got a LiteOn 812S- it's burned over 600 disks without a coaster and they play on everything I've tried them on.

Too true, and it is one of the reasons why DVD-Video has been the subject of such debate and controversy. No two players decode the same disc in exactly the same way unless they are the same make and model. And even then, they will not look exactly the same with two different display units with the same settings.

Having said that much, I have tried repeatedly to make my old man's Lite-On DVD-ROM region-free to failure. After all the attempts, it should be no surprise that I bought an LG DVD-RAM burner that, I later found out, was twice the price of a Lite-On DVD-R/RW-only burner, even after being discounted to $198.

I don't know about Lite-On DVD burners but my Lite-On CD burner is by far the most fantastic burner I've owned, and I've owned plenty. I'd consider Lite-On manufacturing to be a plus.

Oh, trust me, you will never stop people here from arguing about which drive or format is better.

Better to tell them which one is worse, and then ask them which is supported by the DVD Consortium (ie Toshiba et al). -R is supported by the DVD Consortium, ergo it is worse. It really is that simple.

  29. I wouldnt pay $6 per double layer disk. Thats the cheap stuff, real stuff like say Verbs are more than $12 per disk for double layer. Why you could almost buy a new dvd for about that much.
