  1. i was looking at the pioneer dvr-108, some places say it is dual layer and some say it is double layer, i just want to clarify that it is indeed dual layer and can burn dual layer discs on one side without having to flip over. is there a better dual layer burner out right now? i want the fastest one possible. thanks

  2. The Pioneer DVR-108 is a dual layer (DVD+R DL) burner. DL media is so expensive that very few people, myself included, have burned more than one or two DL discs. That means that it is very difficult to say with any certainty how fast or how well any particular DL media works with any particular DL drive, and how compatible that combination is with any particular standalone player.

If you plan on burning lot's of DL's then you are going to be a pioneer (no pun intended) and I hope you share your results with us.

  3. Anyone heard anything recent on DVD-R DL? Heard everything from "not possible", to "just around the corner". Competing formats would probably drive the price down faster. Although I'm not holding my breath on it being terribly affordable soon.

    Hello,

Actually I've heard some are going for around $100USD. Maybe it's because of the incompatibility problems people have seemed to have. I'm going to wait a generation or two until it gets cheaper and as perfected as possible (next spring??? ).

It is totally your call. DL media is very expensive right now. However I bought and are awaiting it's arrival from newegg a Pioneer 108. Not necessarily for it's DL burning abilities, but for it's hi speed burning of DVD+/-R discs.

The Pioneer 108 and the NEC 3500 are two of the best burners on the market for non DL media. I have burned multiple media on my NEC and the quality is far beyond the Pioneer 107 SL burner. I have seen comparable results with the 108. Right now either one of these 3 is at Newegg for 80 bucks. I have no intention of burning any DL media for years and I would not trade my 3500.
Still a few bugs in the system...

  8. I am going to get NEC3500 very soon from newegg. Should I use it without ugrade firmware? what is the upside/downside of upgrading the firmware?

  9. THe LG burner I bet is very good I do not have the DL one but if I was going to get one I get the LG. One reason I love DVD-RAM for backing stuff works like a hard drive. I saw the Dl LG at www.newegg.com

There is currently one official firmware from NEC. Check out the cdfreaks web site and see if the hacks add anything you need. I find that the original firmware is just fine. I would say use it for a while until you find an over-riding reason to hack (voiding your warranty).
