  1. I just read another post by jsl suggesting that we try running CDSpeed on a Liteon that had been updated to read burned DVDs at speeds above 8X. I tried this on a number of my Prodisc S03s and Ritek G04s and found out some interesting results.

Almost every Ritek I tested with the transfer rate test had problems reading above 8X. Some of the test results were so bad I was concerned that the data was lost.

None of the Prodiscs I tested had any problems whatsoever. They all ran a straight line right up to 14X. Even though all the Riteks are readable and playable and will rip at higher speeds in DVDDecrypter, this testing seems to indicate that in some way the Prodiscs are better, at least when burned on a Pioneer 107.

If anyone knows more about what CDSpeed is telling me I would very much appreciate it. For now, Prodisc is my choice.
Still a few bugs in the system...

This is nothing new to me. One of my relatives has the most stubborn player in the world. It won't read most burns very well. If it ACTUALLY plays, it'll ONLY play. You try to FF or REW and it'll gag and lock up the player (sometimes requiring an unplug).

RITEK did this ALL THE TIME on the player. Horrible.
LD, PRINCO, RICOH etc. ... bad.

MCC Taiwan and PRODISC? Perfect plays, even at 8x FF or 8x REW.
I can only guess it has to do with the AZO and quality of the media.
TY, TDK and MXL is the same way (in terms of 0 problems).

The PRODISC blew me away. Finally! A cheaper (budget) media that acts as good as a 1ST class discs (at least when it's not a coaster, hence the 2ND class rating on it, higher coaster count). When it works, it's awesome. When it doesn't, it doesn't. There really is no half-way on PRODISC.

It's just a transfer speed test. It tells you how fast your DVD-ROM unit can read said media with out any problems (indicating a straight line, and a smooth diag. line). Any place there are dips or trough, indicates your DVD-ROM unit had trouble reading that media at that (those) spots.

It depends heavily on system config, and PC activity during the testing cycle. Browsing the internet while testing will scew results to show up worse than the should. Improper IDE config, will hinder the test also. The Lite-On 166 likes to be set as a master drive for best results, setting this drive to slave will cause slower read back. The 165 doesn't have this problem (that I've seen). Also, the 166 doesn't not have that great of a laser for high speed read back (when compared to the 165 or a Toshiba DVD-ROM unit).

The faster the media is able to be read, one could claim, that the media is of higher quality at the outer edges.

But, set top DVD players only read back at 1x, so besides bragging rights, the test is pretty moot IMO.

That's where I always have trouble with RITEK.
Sometimes even chapter skipping (must do it slowly).

Defect of the player, sure, but the media obviously has something to do with it. Reflectivity maybe.

While I am also a Prodisc advocate I just got my Liteon 167T to work with Kprobe2 and I found, much to my annoyance, that Riteks had PI of 24 while Prodisc had PI of 160 at 4X. Both are OK readings and I know that ROM is not the best reader and Ritek goes through the roof if I increase the speed to 12X whereas Prodisc does not, but I would have slept much better if Prodisc had a PI closer to 50 or so. Weird, still not quite Grade A. I guess you just can't get it all for cheap. Come on TY, drop below a buck!
