  1. hello all
i've been filming some material for a local rock band and have been running into some problems with the audio
the basic set up is this
    i have a promo video
    a film of a gig
    and an interview
the promo video has a track direct from the studio session encoded to ac3(pCM also worked fine by the way)and this plays fine across the board.
the gig is 3 minidisk sources mixed down to one and encoded to the same standard ac3 file
this one plays fine in my Sanyo standalone,on the PC and at the pressing plant that are going to print this but won't play the audio on my bedroom DVD(the wifes sleeping so i can't check the model number) or the playstation 2
also one of my neighbours had a problem with this on her machine.
The interview has a mixture of material
some is recorded on a seinhieser gun mic to a sony dv cam, some is studio material and some is material from the gig
this again is allmixed to one track and encoded ac3
only the studio material plays fine (from the same track!!)
i've never came across this problem before and i'm baffled
i'm thinking some players may downsample the sound and thus not be able to play this stuff
but the funny thing is all tracks are recorded with the same settings from soundforge
and all track play full quality on my own and some other machines!?!
i hope i'm just being a silly bugger and i've missed something real obvious
can any of you folks help???
    TIA
    pete

  2. I believe Minidisc is sampled at 44.1khz.

The DVD spec requires 48khz audio.

You must upsample your audio to 48khz sample rate before you encode to .ac3

Some players will allow you to play 44.1khz, even though it violates the DVD spec, whereas others will refuse to tolerate such spec violations. This may be what is happening in your case.

I must say, though, that I would be surprised if your DVD authoring software did not flag 44.1khz audio as an error, when trying to import or multiplex it.

Unfortunately, using Minidisk for capturing DVD soundtracks is a really bad idea - not only will you need to upsample it to 48khz, but you will also need to decompress what is an already highly compressed format, before recompressing it to .ac3. (please see my remarks here: https://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=943616&highlight=arky+eac#943616 )

In short, you are going to encounter a severe quality hit, with the possibility of quite noticeable audio artifacts.

Sorry for the pessimism - just telling it like it is, to give you the facts

Good luck, repost if you need any more info.

    Arky ;o)

  3. thanx for the advice there
i'm sure we're on the right track here
although i did up sample my sound to 48khz
the sienhiser track was straight to dv (although a mono track)
    captured on avid xp
and was also sampled to 48khz

  4. oh yeah i forgot
i also channel converted the mono audio from the sienhiser with soundforge
and don't forget the elements of the tracks which work across the board are all cd source upsampled in the same procedure
    thanx again
