I was hoping someone could suggest a DVD player that I can use to play PAL DVDs on my NTSC TV. I tried to play PAL discs using a PS2 with a Gameshark region free disc and got at error that my TV is the wrong format. I guess I would need a player that does on-the-fly conversions. My local retailers include Walmart, Target, Sears, Best Buy, Circuit City, Ultimate Electronics, and CompUSA. Could someone suggest a DVD player that I might find at one of these retailers that will allow me to play PAL on NTSC TV. Thanks

They are not the best DVD players out there, but the Apex units can play both NTSC and PAL.

i recently did a review of the pioneer dv-270(s)
https://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=215904&highlight=
its an outstanding dvd player & only $70. it will also do only the fly conversions of pal->ntsc. i tried 2 pal dvdr's on it, they both worked fine.
of course it wont play out of region discs, unless there is a region hack i dont know about.. -
phillips 727 is the best I've found. if they don't have it at your local walmart, then you can still order from walmart.com I think, and then return it to your local retailer if it doesn't work for you. The quality of the player and of the output (the 727 has 3:2 pulldown) is better than the 3 different apex players I have tried.

The Cyberhome CH-DVD 500 is a great pick.
Click HERE for simple remote control hacks to make it region free and copy protection free. PAL to NTSC is built-in no hack needed.
The Cyberhome can be ordered for $79.95 directly from the CYBERHOME website.
Another good source is the HK FLIX website. They carry region free PAL to NTSC DVD players by a number of companies including JVC, TOSHIBA, PIONEER and MALATA.
The Cyberhome CH-DVD 500 is cheap but probably the best one for PAL to NTSC quality although it has a few quirks but hey you can't beat the price.

Friend of mine has bough Philips (see above) in Sam's Club for 50$. Excellent playback and the reason he bought it is same as yours (PAL on NTSC). I own JVC XVS 60 which I picked for the same reason (most JVC's convert PAL) some time ago. PAL playback is as good as NTSC.

After returning a few cheaper players for various reasons, I've been very happy with my Toshiba SD-4900.

Toshiba SD4900: I just got one from buy.com for $69 including shipping. It is hackable to region free and does NTSC/PAL conversion.

I've heard from some people that certain models of Toshiba DVD players just do not like DVD-R discs. In short they seem to be very picky. I don't know if it has to do with MEDIA or the way they were BURNED or what.
You guys with the Toshiba 4900 ... ever test it with DVD-R discs?
If so what brand of MEDIA and how did you burn it?

My Philips DVD-727 was region free right out of the box.The Pal mode works perfect too.Set it to NTSC in the DVD menu to play Pal DVD's.By the way,the DVD-727 is suppose to read +R and +RW DVDs.I tried a Maxell +R and it doesn't work.I burned a couple and no go.The 727 doesn't list as playing -R DVDs but they work fine.Anyone know why the +R don't work on my 727?.Is it maybe it just doesn't like Maxell +R or +RW,maybe different brand of disk or am I suppose to use a different setting when burning.I use DVD Shrink 3.0 and Nero 6 ultra edition.

Lite-On lvd-2002 will convert PAL to NTSC and vice versa. With a remote hack you can make it region free. I also own an apex ad-2600 that will also do the conversion.
Look, let me explain something. I'm not Mr. Lebowski; you're Mr. Lebowski. I'm the Dude. So that's what you call me. That, or Duder. His Dudeness. Or El Duderino, if, you know, you're not into the whole brevity thing-- -

Actually, from what I remember, there are two flavors of this, the "yes, it will play PAL on NTSC" and "it will do a true conversion while playing on the NTSC".

Sony 4XDVD-R and Sony 4XDVD+RW both work fine for me. Authored with TMPGEnc DVD Author, burn with Nero on a NEC2500A.
