I am going on vacation to europe soon, and as we all know the television standard is PAL there, rendering me unable to watch anything i record with my camcorder on a television there. However, i am bringing my laptop which has a Firewire port. Is there any way i can just watch the tapes in my camcorder by connecting the firewire cable to my laptop?

If you have WinXP, it will show up as a device in My Computer. You can then double-click on it and view what's on it.

The PAL world isn't as closed minded to format as the NTSC one. You will probably find that a good proportion of PAL televisions will accept an NTSC signal, especially those televisions made in the last 5 years.

absolutely right, gunslinger. most European TV's will allow you to feed in an NTSC signal ... the older ones may only show you a B&W picture but most recent sets will have no issues
