    Hi,

A pal of mine says that it is always better to download Avi's over Mpeg1's. He says the quality is better. I want to put them on a DVD which presumably means converting them to Mpeg2? Will this degrade or improve the quality of the finished product?

Any other advantages of Avi over Mpeg1?

God... being a newbie is lousy!

    Thanks for any help

An AVI can be of several formats, such as DV, DIVX and several others. DIVX can have good video quality at high compression rates and small file sizes and when converted to MPEG2 will have to become quite a bit larger to obtain the same quality.

Generally MPEG1 is a lower quality, such as a VCD.

Nothing will improve the quality, you try to keep it the same. Sometimes you have to compromise quality to achieve a smaller file size.
