  1. I converted a avi-file (movie of +- 700 MB) to dvd-mpeg (+- 3 GB). I don't want to convert it again, so i have +1GB left on my dvd. Can I add a map data (or something like that) to the dvd structure? I would like to put the original avi file on the dvd as well and maybe also the mp3 soundtrack files. So i would have 3 folders:
AUDIO_TS, VIDEO_TS (made by the authoring program) and my own data folder.
If i do this, can i still play my dvd in a stand-alone player? or isn't this going to work? Anyone done this?

  2. Doing some tests with a DVD-RW and my two DVD players, I found that my Apex can play a disk with extra files and folders just fine, but my Sony can't.

The ability to add data to home-authored DVDs would be an excellent way to help get around the problems of the age-old 'will I still be able to play these in a year's time' questions. You'd simply be able to add parity blocks and if an issue arose, for example a simple scratch or erosion of the surface, then just use the parity to restore to your hard drive and reburn the disc.

You can create discs that contain both DVD-Video content and ROM data that can be accessed from a computer with a DVD-ROM drive.
It's a pity DVD Producer doesn't work the way I'd comfortable using (not to mention a crappy UI). Sonic ROM Formatter also has a hybrid DVD function, as does Scenarist. Pretty much if you're looking into hybrid DVD authoring you should check out the Sonic line.

Yes, you can add data on a dvd-video. It should work on ALL dvd players because it is within the dvd standard, many commercial dvds comes with additional dvd-rom data content. Just don't add data files in the video_ts or audio_ts folders.

  5. Can you point me to where the standards say that extra folders are allowed? I'm not doubting you, but there is no mention of it on this site: https://www.videohelp.com/dvd.

I wouldn't be surprised at all if it IS a standard that my Sony simply can't handle. It can't handle 23.97 fps 3:2 pulldown either even though it's a standard.
