After following a banner link from here I bought a spindle of that "Sonic 1/2x" from Shop4Tech.com. The media I got (ID: LONGTEN 001) burns at 4x on my Sony DRU-510A, however. Of the dozen or so I've used, all have burned successfully (for movie backups). But they have a really weird reaction w/ my Apex AD-660 set-top player. The player will try to auto-play them and fail w/ a "Disk Error" message appearing on the screen. But, yet, if I hit the Play or Root Menu buttons on the remote, the disks will load and play through w/o troubles! They do auto-load successfully on my computer, however.
Also: This past Xmas, I had received a 50-spindle of "Sandy Yang" media (ID: VDSPMSAB 01) the giver obviously bought off eBaY. They were rated 1/2/4x but would burn at either 2x or 4x depending on any individual disk. Also, about a third of them failed. If burning one to maximum capacity, ALL bad one's would fail at around 90% (between sectors 1,950,000 & 2,100,000 on average). Using DVDDecryter's burning part or Nero 5.5x would give me an error along the lines of "illegal mode for this track." Checking WinXP's event viewer revealed that the "device/cdrom2 (burner)" has bad blocks. Well, they were a gift, but I'd never buy them myself. Good ones do play fine on my Apex, however.

The discs are probably bad.

They play fine on my ps2. I also have some problems with them playing on my apex (AD-1500). Go figure. There's nothing wrong with your discs. That's just how they are. It's cheap media and not meant to be perfect.

Well, I did read through that site he gave and ran several burned Sonic's through that CD/DVD Speed proggie Surface Test. All blocks came back green (good). They are being used only to make everyday-use backups of discs I own, so no biggie. Particularly, TV episode box-sets so I don't have to take all the originals out everytime.

I took a few of those Sonics down to a friends' house since he has two Apex decks; Apex AD-600A & 1100W. They did exactly the same thing in the 600A but auto-loaded fine in the 1100W. Go figure.

Sonic discs are notorious for not working well in quincy, same with Milton and weymouth too.
Try them in Jamacia Plain or Roslindale and they will work great. For a good laugh, bring em to Blue hills and watch the fun start. Unreal stuff man..

Very funny! Do they work well in FL or quit when the temp falls below 50?

When it falls below 50 here then the disc dies along with the old people. Actually I have tried Sonic media amd it played well in my old Apex AD600A. Burned 4x with dvd author, but the disc was only about 4.1 gigs so I dont know about a full disc.

I bought some after viewing result of many other users' comment, hopefully I would have the same luck like others who could burn this sonic 1x media at 4x speed without any updating firmware. take a look of this link to see what all users think of on shop4tech's Sonic 1x media!

My Sonic 2.4X DVD+R's from Shop4Tech are horrible. One good disc out of 8. These are LONGTEN 002's. I did a surface scan yesterday with CD/DVD Infotool and found that only 91.8% was in the green. Does it get worse than that?
This was a big waste of money. -
That's pretty awful. The one's I got were the 4x -R (LONGTEN001) and I got only one coaster out of the 50. Seemed that only the full "Shrinked" back-ups I made of the Are You Being Served? boxes 1 & 2 had loading troubles on my Apex players (but no trouble on my PC). All others (movies & such) loaded & played fine.
