I have Windows XP with a built-in combo DVD+RW drive and would like to buy a DVD Recorder HDD which would:
1. enable me to record LP/SP VHS TAPES onto disc edit on XP then put back on DVD+rw.
2. HDD 160GB (approx) to hold loose footage or pending download.
3. The 2 options of downloading TV footage to the Recorder HDD or onto a DVD disc & then editing it on XP.
Most importantly I MUST be able to (as my XP only has a DVD+rw be able to edit and save it, since the DVD Recorder as it comes with a disc drive is more likely to be DVD-R/RW & DVD RAM. The RAM side doesn't interest me too expensive that would be just an added bonus.
I had in mind the JVC DRMH30 HDD. Does anybody know whether this model meets good standards? Or will it have to be the panasonic?
Thanks![]()

That JVC sounds like the one you need. If you are going to edit on your PC then burn to DVD+R, what will you be using the 160GB drive for? You could always record to multiple DVD-RW's or DVD-RAM's if you want lots of file space for a particular project. Do you want the HDD for using it like a TIVO? Maybe you can get by with the non-HDD version it is a whole lot less money and is available now. (JVC DR-M10SL)

Duh - your original post answered my question about HDD use. Anyway there has been lots of discussion about the wonders of the new JVC standalone DVD recorder here:

I definitely would like one with a DVD Recorder with a HDD because I am sure it would offer me more flexibility in terms of getting the footage onto the pc, taking out the adverts or whatever and putting it back onto the DVD of your choice, or in my case DVD+ only as my Windows XP burner will only burn onto that. I don't want to invest into a DVD ROM to burn RAM as I reckon the DVD+RW/R will do just fine for a novice like me :P
At the end of the day as long as I can record my VHS tapes onto DVD, and record satelite and normal TV to both HD or DVD RW that will do fine.
Thanks for your help gshelley Shelley's my sister's name
