  1. I am using the Canopus ADVC-100 for capturing from a VCR to Premiere Pro. Since this has no Device Control, I have to start the capture and then just come back later to stop it. I end up with very large capture files and I only need a portion of it. I am stuck with this very large capture file until the final export.

The utility AVICodec says that the codec used by the ADVC-100 is Sony Digital Video.

What I would like to do is start my capture, leave for a while, come back later and stop it. I now have a very large capture file.
At this point I would like to simply crop off the beginning and ending portions that I don't need and then save this smaller AVI file for later editing. I need to know what is the preferred codec for doing this. Of course I am trying to not loose any quality and I also need it to be compatible for editing in Premiere.

At this time, I would like to stay with Premiere as my capture method.

Can someone please provide me with some input on this?

    Thanks

Wait, the Canopus ADVC-100 has no Device Control? I own this product myself and am interested to know if this is true. Remember that Device Control will only work with digital footage and a digital camera. It cannot do this with analog devices. So with analog you have to stop it when it's done.

I really do think that the Canopus has device control for digital devices. Maybe you need to change some settings in Premiere Pro. Go to File --> Capture (brongs up the normal capture box). Then looks for the tab at the top 'Settings' (right next to logging). Look down at the way bottom of that page and you will see a 'Device Control' box. If it says None then that is probably your problem. If this is you case keep following these instructions. Scroll and select 'DV Device Control' from the drop-down menu. Now click the 'Options' button. Here would be the settings for you:

Video Standard: NTSC (or PAL if you live outside the US)
    Device Brand: Canopus
    Device Type: ADVC-100
    Timecode Format: Drop-Frame

I hope that this helps! I have included a picture below to further help you.

I use a ADVC-100 and the 'control' is for a DV camera and it is in the software used for transfer, not the ADVC. The codec the ADVC uses is the one in the camera. To use the DV file with other programs, I use the Panasonic codec. XP will identify the viewing XP system codec as 'Sony' or dvsd. But to answer your question, use Scenanalyzer, it has a setup to time your DV transfers.
