All you need is a Shaggin' Wagon with lava lights and a mirrored ball and you'd be all set. Don't forget your purple hat with a peacock feather.

I am going to college again soon. Was curious as to how I could establish residency without having to live there yet? I really think it would be as simple as getting a P.O. box with a real street address( and have them just forward me the mail that shows up)and using that to get a drivers lisence for that state.
Am I wrong?(method wise, not morally-I already know that I am wrong in that way)my t.v. is wide and so am I. -
Tiny71, I was in your situation, I am a legal resident of Maryland but I really wanted to attend James Madison in VA. I found their are only 2 ways you can attain in-state residence.
Notice: I am told this does not apply in Ohio. I am told that in Ohio, a dorm is a legal residence for tution purposes. I am not sure if this is true.
1.) You need to have family in the state and you declare as dependent on them, your parents will loose tax breaks but you will be a legal resident of the state.
2.) You must own or rent real property [a home or apartment or any real estate] in that state for 1 year and file a state income tax from that residence.
The colleges are more concerned that you are paying taxes to the state the college is in.
I've also seen a catch-22 if the person you are dependent on owns a buisness in the state.
My advice, rent an apartment in the state of the college, declare yourself as living at home with parents (the college can't come in your home w/o your premission) and you will be a commuter student.
That's what i was going to do.
If anyone knows any other ways or probs with mine dont hesitate to correct. -
tiny71 it depends on the state. Some states require that you register to vote, get a driver's license and have an address in the state to be a resident. Here in florida you just need to register to vote and get a license and have proof of address.(ie. some type of bill)
