  1. I was wondering do you need compatible speakers to run DTS. I hear nothing when I choose the DTS audio on my sony tv, but have audio when dolby digital is selected on dvd movies.

  2. You need a DTS decoder, not speakers, in either player or TV. By the way, you can hear an advantage of the DTS sound only on 5.1 home theatre system. Don't bother playing it through TV speakers.

  4. No, it shouldn't. Actually, I don't think any normal TV would have a DTS or even a Dolby Digital decoder since they require digital connection from the player (optical or digital coax). If you're connecting audio through a regular stereo cable, the decoder must be in the player, and it would downmix 5.1 sound to stereo.

Some projection tvs have a DD optical out put and some have coaxial digital outputs but you need a DTS decoder to hear true dts but its not possible from your tv, only a reciever with DD/DTS decoder to hear it from your dvd player.

DD optical output sounds better than coaxial? Whats the exact difference on those two

  7. Regarding the question on optical vs. digital coaxial:

The little research I've done indicates they're extremely similar in sound quality and you will most likely not be able to tell the difference. Just different mechanisms for transferring the signal... I'd pick whatever is available to you for a lower cost, taking into consideration how many optical and digital coax connections you have on your receiver.

If you're talking about that Sony 34" XBR which retailed for about $3,500 a couple years ago, then it does have a built-in HDTV tuner. All HDTV programs are in Dolby Digital (none are in DTS, DD is the standard) but like everyone said you still need to send the Dolby Digital signal out through optical or coaxial to an external decoder. If you don't have a decoder, the HDTV tuner itself can decode the signal into a Lt/Rt stereo signal.

This probably doesn't help you since you wanted info about DVD movies. Oh well, I'm an idiot.
