  1. Hello,

I am looking for a 5.1 channel audio demo file that I can download and burn onto DVD primarily to tune my subwoofer (and to show it off!!!)

Does anyone know if there is something like this available on the Internet?

    Thanks in advance

  2. I don't know about free, but there is a DVD called Video Essentials that let you do that and more. Not really meant to show it off though, more of a tune/setup thing. There is also the THX section on many DVDs (such as Terminator 2) which allow you to set up the video and audio.

I used Video Essentials to tune my system, but it's true that it will not necessarily tune the subwoofer to "show it off". It will help balance the sound levels in your room. If you want to show off your sub, just get the passage that you'll use to impress your friends and set the LFE effect level on your receiver to your taste. If your sub has its own volume dial, you can use that too. Audiophiles may not agree with this method, but everyone has his own way of having fun.

One thing that will help is to set your sub in the corner of a room; it will increase the output level projected in the room (typically, putting a sub against a wall increase the level by 3dB, and against 2 walls in a corner by 6 dB).

Have fun and make sure the wife is out of the house...

This Swedish Radio site has a number of music and dialog files in both DD5.1 and DTS as wave files. You can burn them to a CD-R and play them back through your DVD player for full effect. The site is http://www.sr.se/multikanal/english/e_index.stm

Note : The DVD player must either have it's own decoder and full 5.1 analogue output to the amp, or the amp must a DD and DTS encoder with a digital connection to the player.

I have burned a couple of these and they sound pretty good. The car crash demo gives the speakers quite a work out.

Note : If you try to play these back through a normal CD player you will get pink noise at full volume and may blow you speakers.
