  1. Just goofing around here at the house and I'm using Vegas 4 to capture video from a DV camera through a firewire card into my laptop. I also have USB 2 HD enclosure that I'm wanting to capture to. My lap does have USB 2 ports on it, however when I capture from the camera, through the laptop and straight to the external HD it's working overtime and dropping frames by the bucketfulls. I've got it now capturing to the internal HD on the laptop and it's barely flinching with NO dropped frames. I thought USB 2 was better than this? What am I doing wrong?

doesnt sound like a USB issue...sounds more like an hard drive. the more stuff you have on there, the more problem you will get. that is because the more programs you install, the more cluttered your hard drive is and the startup programs are trying to access the drive while your transferring DV. the solution? the 100% fail-safe solution is to format and install windows and start from scratch. or you can get a new system dedicated to video editing. but lets start off with uninstalling a few programs first.

You would need to dig a bit deeper in some USB2 related forums or websites. It is no mystery that 1394 works way more reliably. Seems to me that either your I/O subsystem and/or USB driver ro not pass the data without flaws. Just keep on using 1394 to internal HD and when done transfer to external HD. Partition Magic or similar will help you create clean an extra partition dedicated to captures if there is a need.
