  1. Hi - total newbie here. I'm editing several years worth of home video. My plan was to burn best quality dvds with the worthy footage, and cram the rest onto another dvd, ("good" quality") for easy archiving. I'm using MyDVD Deluxe 5.0, and it looks like the only way to choose quality is during capture. Am I missing something or do I have to capture again to get the lesser quality for longer duration?

    Thanks

What is the source - analogue (vhs, 8mm Hi-8) or digital (DV, D-8) ?
The best way if to capture to something that wont butcher your files, then use a dedicated mpeg encoder such as TMPGEnc or Mainconcept to create you mpeg-2 files for DVD. You will get much better quality and greater control over the finished archive.

If you have DV, then simply transfer the files across, edit, then encode. If you are restricted to analogue capture, try Huffyuv or m-jpeg first, then encode after.

Where ever possible, stay away from one button solutions unless you are happy to have no control over the output.

  3. I'm using digital 8. I'll look into TMPGenc. Thank you.
