  1. Hi. I'm really new to this, and this may be a really stupid question. However, I can't seem to find the answer elsewhere, so what the heck. I'm "capturing" video with an ADVC-100, but I'm not sure what software to use to store the information sent from the ADVC on my hard drive. I've been using Microsoft's movie maker, but the colors didn't seem quite right (a bit too dark and too red). I am assuming that this because the Canopus codec is encoding things slightly differently than whatever it is that MS MM is expecting to receive? It just occurred to me to try Scenalyser and set that to Canopus-dv compatible (duh!). It seems that the colors are right now, but my question is, is the the best codec for me to use? Would it be better to use something like Huffyuv, or do I need to stick with Canopus-dv, since the capture has already been encoded that way by the advc-100 and storing as anything else would seem to be a mistake. Am I lookng at this right??

    Thanks

I have the advc-100 and use the Panasonic codec & it works fine. I also use Scenalyzer Live to capture.

dlister, you're thinking on the right lines.

The canupus box encodes into canopus DV format. all you do is change your DEcoder in windows. the logical choice for this seems to be the canopus DV decoder (from canopus website) although mainconcept, sony, panasonic and microsoft will all work. they all produce slightly different results, so it's personal preference. i use mainconcept and have been happy with it. capture software i use is DVapp, this does nothing more than copy the incoming DV stream to disk, and has been flawless for me.

  4. Thanks!

So, what codec does dvapp use? Does the fact that it copies the stream directly to the hd mean that it doesn't use one? I may have to test out the Mainconcept codec - the Canopus codec off the site is decode only so I can't edit the clips and then save them again. You wouldn't happen to know of a Canopus codec that will let me re-encode as well?

You might take a look at this, a discussion of DV codecs on the doom9 site.http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=eb4264b098fed70ece46c56bf9741035&threadid=33526

correct, DVapp just copies the stream to the hard drive, no codec required as the video stream isn't altered.

There is a full Canopus codec, but i don't think it's free.
