Hello guys, I am relatively new to video capturing and have a question. I purchased an ADVC 100 to capture my 8mm tapes and when I capture a 2hr segment of a tape the file size is 20G! To me this seems way to big of a file size for a 2hr video. I was wondering if you guys had any input.

Im using windows live to import the video and the files are saved as .avi

    Thanks for the help!

    No, this is perfectly normal.
DV is about 10GB per hour.

  3. 13 GB/hr. If you want smaller files you compress with a lossy codec like MPEG 2 after capturing.

DV is a good format for editing and for home camcorder recordings there is good reason to archive as DV if future re-edit is expected. Otherwise you can encode after edit to various formats.

Since Video8/Hi8 is interlace and home camcorder video usually is high motion hand held and noisy, the prefered distribution format is DVD 720x480i or 720x576i at high >8Mb/s average bit rate.

Thanks for the replies! I just have a few more questions. What software can be used to compress the files?

In addition, what software would you guys recommend for creating a DVD with these files? I use Sony Vegas for editing purposes. Does the DVD maker in windows 7 work well?

dvdauthorgui is one to try for authoring.

avstodvd is one to convert to dvd. I think it can do basic menus but you can use dvdauthorgui for making menus.

Vegas contains a good MPeg2 encoder. It will also export a DV.avi format archive of your edit.

    What is your Vegas version?

Assuming you are using a 720x480i/29.97 DV project, use the

    Render as
    MPeg2
"DVD Architect NTSC Video Stream" template

but under custom, increase the average bit rate to 8,000,000 to 9,500,000 bps for best quality.
