How to Capture Streaming Media to your Hard Drive using Graphedit.

Tools you'll need: Graphedit

Note: this is more like copying the file to your hard drive but when the file is done it will be MS-YUV format so the output file will be very large but there will be no quality loss.

1.)Get the URL
Get the Url of the file you are going to capture. In this case I used a video stream from Tech Tv's Unscrewed website. when the file begins to play, right-click on the video and choose properties and highlight and right-click the url and choose copy.



2.)Paste the url in Graphedit
Open Graphedit and choose File/Render Url. then right-click in the url window and choose paste. It may take a minute for your file to show, espesially if you're on dial-up.



3.)Remove Default output filters
The last filter boxes on each line need to be removed so we can add multiplex and file writing filters. Just click on the last filter box on each line and press delete on your keyboard.



4.)Insert New Filters
Now Click on Graph/Insert Filters and click the + to expand the Direct Show Filters and then click on AVI MUX and click Insert Filter. Then click on File Writer and click insert filter and you will see a file box pop up.type in your filename along with the file extension and click open. Click close to close the filters window. Now connect your Filters together as shown in the image.



Now this next step may not be necessary but for the sake of knowledge...

Right-click on the avi mux filter that you added and choose filter properties and choose Full in the interleaving section under the first tab.
Now click play and wait for the play button to light back up.



I hope this helps everyone that wants a video off the internet.

Replace the spaces in the filenames with %20 and it should work fine. Like

Is it possible to add a codec option somewhere?
It would be nice if I could save it to hyffyuv directly.
It would be even better if I could save it in it's original compessed format without any decoding, just straight saving of the stream.

I've been trying to figure out how to save directly from the stream without having to uncompress it but haven't fugured it out yet. You can insert compression filters into the graph but in this tutorial you're capturing streaming video off the internet and usually the videos are only about 5 or 6 mins long so even though the file size is large you can re-encode it in about 30 min... I'll post a how to on inserting compression filters into the graph but I don't know if it will affect things like frame droppage or desync...

To use Compression while capturing just insert compression filters into the graph before the avi mux filter.

For the video expand the video compressors section and choose your compression codec of choice (note: not all codecs will work and you can't adjust the codec settings...) for this post I used the huffyuv codec because on a previous attempt using the divx codec there were errors in the output video stream.

For the Audio expand the audio compressors section and choose audio codec of choice (once again you won't be able to adjust the codec settings). for this post I used PCM because I had trouble with the mp3 codec.

Connect the filters as shown below:



Experiment with different filter combinations that you would normally use with vdub or other video editing software...

hi,
i tried your method of capturing streaming media, but unfortunately it doesnt work the way u told us. the audio is good but i loss the video. and it even has the result of playing the output file fast.

i hope u can advise me what to do precisely. by the way, the media i tried to capture are madonna's video from madonna.com and toxic of britney from britney.com. their format are asx and asf. i presumed these types of files are supported well by the graphedit or not?

How Can you download or Record Streaming Media on a webpage that uses java or javascript?

The link i click on is a javascript link, it opens a new window to show the video and i can't find the URL. It will not allow me to right click on the video itself, any suggestions??
