Yes, it is very much possible that a VCD or SVCD recorded on a 99minute CD will not play(to the end) on your DVD player. The recorder, software recording program and player all need to be compatible with 99 minute CDs. 99minute CDs are now pretty much obsolete considering how inexpensive DVD media/recorders are.

Some information on 99 minute CD recorders can be found here:

unfortunately the notes are in german

There is a discussion thread here:

  3. Some players will not read those cds to the end. i read some comments on some older pioneer DVD players once, they would stop at 92 minutes, some players did worse. I guess newer players will not have so much problems, but then again they almost cost the same as DVDs, compared to the capacity they are 3-5 times more expensive, so why bother for VCD and SVCD? If its for audio, fair enough, but video, no.

  4. stay away from mirror media
from a stack of 25 whitte tops i have used 16 and atleast 10 no longer work
they either didnt burn properly or have scratched the top surface even tho they are stored in jewel cases
for movies which dont fit on standard 80 minute disk just split them across 2cd you can get decent 80 minute disks delivered for under £15 per 100 whereas the extra length ones are usually almost double the price

personally i dont suggest making vcds at all the quality is shocking

    svcds are acceptable

my suggestion would be get a dvdrw
if your backing up the films yourself its far quicker than all the reencoding just to make a dvd

if the mpeg files are downloaded odds are they are a cam job or look awful

also as svcds are about 50 minutes/800mb you can fit at least 2 films on a dvd

i got a dvd rw about 2 months ago and it has already paid for itself
datasafe 4x ricoh go4 dvd-rs are 40 pence a disk and hold almost 7 cds
i estimate 100 dvds and youv made back the cost of the writer
100 dvds= £40 and 430 gig space and the writer for 60-70 quid total £100-£110
430 gig of cds is 628 cds at a cost of around a 100 quid plus some carrycases total £110
