My DVD player will now only play CDs - is it time for a new one or is there something I can try to fix the problem??

You can try cleaning the laser lens, but it's more likely that the optical/laser pickup head has become defective, a common problem for the optical storage devices. The out-of-warranty repair will probably cost you more than buying a new player.

This is my favorite player. Clean the laser, that's all it takes.
