Okay. Please do not flame me. I have tried 2 types of media on my NEC-2100AD: Ritek 8X, took about 20 minutes to burn; and verbatim 8X, took about 11 minutes to burn. I Used Sonic Record Now Deluxe. How does the math work? Is it 120 minutes/speed of media, ie. 120/2 speed = 60 minute burn? Thus 120/8 = 15 minute burn? I will be getting my Sony DRU 700 in a day or so, and would like to burn at a "true" 8x. In other words as fast as possible. Thanks for any thoughts.

    1x= 60 min, 2x=30 min, 4x=15 min, 8x= 8-10 minutes (because they don't burn the whole time @ 8x) .

These are rough but that is the speed

  3. 1x59-60 minutes
    2x45minutes
    4x 28-30minutes
    6x 20-21minutes\
    8x 12-13minutes

This of course is just my experiences. I typically use dvd-r media with a sony dru500a and a pioneer 107d with hacked FW. My software of choice it Nero Burning rom

Dis-regard my original timings they are indeed wrong. I was sleeping. The hacked FW on the pioneer has worked well. The other times are definately more accurate. My original reasons for going with the Sony DRU500a burner was the 8meg cache and the Duel support.

    1x59-60 minutes
    2x30-32 minutes
    4x 15-18 minutes
    6x 12-13 minutes
    8x 9-13 minutes

I also did a large 35 disc project and I was burning with 2 Sony U14's and 1 sony DRU500a using 2x media. 1 Sony u14 was hooked up via usb external box, the other u14 was connected via firewire box and the Dru500a was hooked up via IDE. the average times burning were 27-33 minutes simultaneously. The USB hook up was the least reliable.

Looks like the verbatim burns closest to the "true" 8x. It will be interesting to see how the medias burns on the Sony DRU 700. Anyone have experience with other Sony drives, firmware, speeds, etc?

  6. How come there's such a big difference in burn time for 4x.
JTOMMYJ reported around 15 minutes and DUN4CHEAP reported around 30 minutes.
Somebody please clarify. My experience said around 15 minutes.

15 minutes is the standard that a 4x disc should take to burn 4.7GB (or 4.3) depending on who's counting.

My post is what the speeds are. dun4cheap is stating his experiences. His 4x disc could have taken longer for a myriad of reasons (buffer underrun problems, bad media, etc.) That is the difference.

Sony no longer manufactures their own dvd drives. The Sony 700A which is dual layer DVD+R/RW burner is a rebadged LITEON drive 832S. You can check this site regarding firmware for the Sony 700A drive.

    Sorry

I typically get around 15 mins for a 4X burn (not like I time it or anything).

If you burn an ISO with DVDDecrypter, watch the read rate. It don't constantly sit on 4X for me (I think someone already sorta pointed this out). 4X is the average burn speed, not the burn speed full stop. Its not as if all burners load up to their rated speed and sit at that the whole time - they fluctuate depending on buffer conditions and your IDE configs.
    If in doubt, Google it.

  14. After burning about 500 DVDs, I've come to the conclusion that burn speeds are moreso theoretical numbers. I'm not even so sure I trust burning at 8 speed anymore, its so inconsisent.

Burning at 4X tends to give me the most consistant burn times: Between 12 to 14 minutes, depending on the media.

Also, I have a funny feeling that DVD firmware upgrades are being tweaked to actually control burn speeds based on what media brand you are burning. I know this seems to be the case with the Plextor 708A firmware. Perhaps this helps with more reliable burns and less coaster.
