  1. I'm new to burn DVD for home movie. I just recently bought a Sony DVD writer (model DRU-530A). The sales person told me that I should use DVD-R media to make DVD home movie and DVD+R for data. However, when I read some material it also indicates that most of the player will also play DVD+R when used to create home video.

I'm a bit not sure which mediea (DVD-R or DVD+R) to buy. Can someone please advise me which media that I should use to make my home movie that will allow me to play on any DVD player. (I have a Sony DVD Player which is 3 years old) connected to my TV and home theater. Will home movie created using DVD+R work on it ?

Thanks in advance for any suggestion.

You might try the media forum, but I prefer RitekG04 DVD-R media. This is a highly debated subject and you are not going to get a definitive answer.

I also believe that DVD-R is the more widely compatible type, although I could be wrong on that, but my DVD-R play in everything in Best Buy and Circuit City and I've never had one not play for anyone.

DVD-R or DVD+R does not really matter as far as quality for anything. (The only difference is who owns the patent on the media, and the selection in your local area). The only thing that matters is whether or not your standalone player will play the + or the - R format, and whether your burner will burn the + or the - R format. To find out, look up your player in the "DVD Players" list to the left.

DVD-R is the older format, and has slightly higher compatability in standalone players, especially older models. DVD+R is less compatabile in older players, but anything under about 2 years old will probably play them. The difference between the two is probably around 5 - 10% overall. Having said that, you can bitset DVD+R to appear as if it were a pressed disk, wihich can increase compatability to the same level as -R or better.

Best bet, look at the players you are most likely to be using, then check out the DVD player list <------- and see what users are saying about their kit. This way you get a real world view (OK, scary if you consider this place representative of the real world)

  5. More choice for 8x DVD+R than 8x DVD-R on the market.

But more cheap 4x DVD-R than 4X DVD+R to buy.

Quality: what U paid, what U get!
