It's time to replace my ageing LG-GMA4020B and I've narrowed it down to three writers:

    Sony DWU-18AS (£58)
    LG GSA-4082B (£56)
    Pioneer DVR-107 (£62)

I don't know which to choose. The old LG has given me great service, I have a couple of DVD-RAMs but never really used them. The Pioneer seems a popular choice, but i've been given conflicting advice on the Sony - some say it does CDRs at 40x, others say 24x. And some sites say it does -R at 8x while others say only 4x.

Your advice would be most welcome, especially concerning the Sony.

  2. Get the Pioneer if you want great -R burn quality and the ability to burn cheap -R discs. Get the Sony if you want DL-upgradability. Ignore the LG.

i am also thinking about the pioneer, got NEC1300 at the moment.

    Questions:
    1. Whats the difference between 107 and 107D?
    2. are there any other things you should consider about the pioneer? Dont wanna get another nec, fed up with it, wanna brun cheap media fast!

  4. Me too Zecnubis, 107D, i regret bigtime i didnt get one in the first place, this nec was wasted money. Anyway, the Nec behave well now after i changed to +R disks (samsung/Taiyo Yuden). I still prefer -R, not much doubt the Pioneer will do that job better than any other burner. 895 NOK for the 107D now, thats cheap, i paid 847 for the ND1300A, that time the 107D was like 1500NOK.

Went out and got the Pioneer 107 this morning. Very happy with it so far. Only £62 from MicroDirect in Manchester.

I never used the DVD-RAM in my old LG so I couldn't really see the point of going for another. And from reading about the Sony in other posts it seems like it's just a rebadged LiteOn / Optorite.

Is it me, or is Sony just concerned with their products looking good, and not it's reliability?

  6. £62, very cheap, lucky you over there. Nec ND2500 cost the same here.
Still, i like that the 107D can read DVD-RAM (even if slow slow only, 2x someone said in another thread), just in case i one day come across some, but writing support for it i cant imagine i'll ever need, and i havent had all good experiences with LG cd burners, bad VCD/SVCD standalone player compatibility at higher speeds with cheap media.

Looks like its no difference, also on pioneers own pages they use 107 and 107D kinda random.

  10. Lol @ Zechnubis. BURN PRINCO, BURN!

btw, good news to all Scandinavians (maybe old news, but new for me): I went to Clas Ohlson when i was in the city today, they lowered the prices for DVD cases to same price as Biltema, AND Clas Ohlsons cases are standard size, while Biltema need slighly bigger covers. Blank DVD media still VERY expensive at Clas Ohlson (TraxData).

Thor: yeeeahhhh! gonna burn crap media such as Princo and SW all the way!!! Finally gonna get the pioneer i should have bought a long time ago!

Traxdata media from Clas Ohlson is actually quite nice-price, considering what you get. They are Ritek G04, and burn reliable and fast, thinking of buying a bunch of them.

Poor bastard thats buying my Nec...
My nec has served me well, but it is time to move on to greener pastures.

  12. I knew the traxdata was Ritek, coz i bough DVD-RW from Clas. But look at what the americans are paying for Ritek! Clas is like 3 or even 4 times more expensive!
